My client is a privately owned Auckland business at the centre of the region's construction and civil sector.

Since being set up over a decade ago, they've built a strong reputation as a convenient, go-to site for cleanfill and waste concrete tipping. They also supply recycled eco-aggregate and quarried aggregates to builders, civil contractors and earthworks businesses across the city. Sustainability is built into how they work - demolition and construction waste goes in, and quality recycled product comes out - so less ends up in landfill, and projects get a cost-effective option.

I'm pleased to present this newly created Transport Despatch Manager role, which will appeal to an experienced bulk haulage 'all-rounder' - someone who still loves a hands-on driving element to their role, as well as operational leadership.

About the role:

You'll report directly to the business owner and take full ownership of a modern truck-and-trailer fleet and its driver team. Despatch, compliance, safety, people leadership and commercial growth all sit with you.

This is a genuine working leadership role: up to half your time will be spent driving.

Key responsibilities are:
  • Run the fleet: Plan the week, direct drivers day to day and keep every unit productive
  • Lead the team: Coach, motivate and manage drivers, and deliver expert training for licence upgrades, performance improvement and performance correction
  • Own compliance: Schedule servicing, repairs, CoFs, RUCs and registrations with the in-house diesel mechanic, and sort out breakdowns quickly
  • Champion safety: Lead health and safety on site and on the road, run toolbox meetings, investigate incidents by the book and manage insurance claims
  • Drive improvement: Use Teletrac Navman data to lift productivity, cut downtime and control costs, then build the systems a new role needs
  • Grow the business: Use your industry network to grow contract hire work, raise the business's profile in the industry and help the MD manage contractors and negotiate rates
  • Report and drive: Provide monthly reporting to the business owner, and get behind the wheel when the operation needs you
What you'll bring
  • 5+ years as a hands-on fleet or despatch manager in bulk haulage, leading truck-and-trailer movements and drivers
  • A career that started as a driver, with a current Class 5 licence and expert jack-knifing skills (essential)
  • Proven driver-training ability
  • Experience managing third-party cartage contractors
  • Working knowledge of Teletrac Navman or similar GPS fleet systems
  • Confidence with Microsoft Office, especially Excel
  • Mechanical knowledge (a real advantage)
  • Strong knowledge of health and safety, and the presence to lead it
  • A wide, established network across haulage, cartage and construction
  • An organised, methodical approach and sound judgement under pressure
  • A strong but personable leadership style that earns respect from drivers
  • Reliability, a strong work ethic and the ambition to take ownership and grow with the role
What's on offer
  • A competitive salary, company vehicle and tools of the trade
  • Direct access to the business owner
  • A new role you can genuinely make your own
  • A close-knit, friendly team in a handy Auckland location
