The role
Our bookkeeping and payroll team keep the numbers right. We need someone who turns those numbers into decisions for our clients
This role designs and runs the management reporting, accounting systems and financial workflows our small and medium business clients use to run their businesses. You build the reports, the forecasts and the systems behind them, and you tell business owners what the numbers mean for them
You’ll work across management reporting, budgeting and forecasting, app stack design, workflow mapping and complex client engagements. You talk directly with clients, work alongside our Perth and Philippines teams, and own the jobs you run from the onboarding review through to completion
Your day could look like this. Building a cash flow forecast in Fathom and writing the commentary that helps an owner decide whether to hire. Working out whether a client can afford a new vehicle or piece of equipment. Mapping a messy finance workflow from receipt to report and redesigning it so it works. Choosing an app stack and integrating it with Xero. Testing an AI tool on a real process, setting the review controls and measuring what it changed. Investigating a problem file and coming back with what happened and what to do next
We hire senior people and trust them to run their patch. You make the calls, push back when something’s off, and don’t wait for permission to act
This is an in-office role. We’ve found the work goes better when we’re together for it
What you’ll do
design and deliver performance-based management reports and KPI dashboards each month and quarter in Fathom and Xero, and prepare reporting that supports governance for boards and other stakeholder
build budgets, rolling forecasts and cash flow forecasts in Fathom and Xero, and monitor performance against them
assess client accounting systems, and recommend and integrate the right app stack with Xero and Fathom, including data mapping, chart of accounts and tracking category design
map client finance workflows from source documents to reporting, and redesign processes and internal controls
help clients set budgeting and accounting policies, and maintain the systems and controls you put in place
evaluate and implement AI and automation tools in accounting processes, set review controls and measure their impact
examine operating costs, income and expenditure, and advise on pricing, cost management, financial planning and risk
appraise the cash flow impact and financial risk of capital purchases and other investment decisions
run financial investigations at onboarding and on problem files, and report findings with recommendations
benchmark performance and lead efficiency and quality improvement initiatives
review the bookkeeping and payroll team’s work, and train and coach them on projects, new systems and tools
What you bring
registered BAS agent, or CA/CPA qualified
Xero certified
certified in Fathom, Syft or another reporting app
a degree in accounting, commerce or business (audit focus)
a BBIS, BSIS or similar information systems qualification is a bonus
leadership study or courses, formal or otherwise
proven management accounting experience. Enough that you can build a forecast, read a set of numbers and tell an owner what to do next
a systems brain. You see how data moves from source documents to reporting, and where it breaks
curiosity about AI and automation, and the judgement to know where it helps and where it needs a human check
clear communication with business owners, boards and the team. You make the numbers make sense
self-awareness. You know what’s yours to call and when to pull others in
Six months in
Six months in, you’re delivering management reporting and forecasts for a portfolio of clients, you’ve led at least one systems or workflow redesign from start to finish, and you’re helping shape how Digit uses AI in its own work
What this role isn’t
This isn’t a team management role. You’ll coach and give feedback to team members on projects, but nobody reports to you. It isn’t a compliance-only job either. If you want to prepare the numbers and hand them over, this isn’t your role. We need someone who wants to sit with a business owner and help them make the call
Travel
You’ll sometimes visit client offices. There’s also occasional interstate travel, paid for by Digit, to attend conferences and learning events that support the role
