We’re excited to recruit for a part-time, Live-Out Assistant/Taituarā (Personal Care Worker), to join our intentional community in Paraparaumu, New Zealand. L’Arche strives to shape a more human society by engaging people of different abilities—people with and without intellectual disabilities—in a life-changing experience of companionship, learning, belonging, and fun. More than a job, L’Arche is an exceptional adventure in community, friendship, and personal growth!

Role Description/Overview:

The role of Assistant/Taituarā (Personal Care Worker) is a live-out, paid, position connected to one of L’Arche Kāpiti’s residential homes and/or day activities programme, with an expected commitment of 15-20 hours/weeks (plus possibility of casual hours). L’Arche Kāpiti is both an intentional Christian community and a residential disability service provider. Each Assistant/Taituarā is responsible to help create and foster a safe and home-like atmosphere for those with intellectual disabilities (known as Tāngata Whaiora or “Core Members”) and other Taituarā to live and thrive in.

The part-time Assistant/Taituarā works with a house team of several other Taituarā and a Leadership team (based out of the office). In addition to direct support to Tāngata Whaiora, the Live-Out Assistant offers support in the areas of administration and household management, thus helping to carry some responsibility in the home and being an additional support to the House Leader. The focus for these two teams is the well-being of Tāngata Whaiora and Taituarā in the home and community, to ensure that the home is living out the L’Arche International Identity and Mission statements and Charter to the best of its ability.

  • To foster an environment in community that responds to the changing needs of our members, whilst being faithful to the core values of our founding story.

  • To engage in our diverse cultures, working together toward a more human society.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Fostering an environment where the value and unique contribution of each member in the house is respected and appreciated.

  • Supporting growth, autonomy, confidence, and a full life for each Tangata Whaiora.

  • Assisting Tāngata Whaiora with their personal care routines as needed (dressing, showering, etc.)

  • Supporting Tāngata Whaiora in following the direction of medical professionals, including administering medication.

  • Supporting Tāngata Whaiora to be as independent as possible (i.e., cooking, cleaning, making life choices, attaining personal goals).

  • Communicating effectively (in oral, written, and electronic forms). Listening actively.

  • Collaborating well with others in the house and community, building trust and encouraging each other’s growth.

  • Sharing in household tasks, including grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning, and laundry.

  • Participating in house traditions, celebrations, prayer and personal reflection. Supporting and encouraging Tāngata Whaiora on their chosen spiritual journey.

Minimum qualifications, experience, and skills of Successful Applicants:
