Engineering Geologist / Senior Engineering Geologist
Geotechnical, Earthquake and Dam Specialists
At EGL, we strive to see beyond. We’re an employee-owned, engineer-led New Zealand consultancy with over 40 years’ experience, known for technical excellence and solving highly complex problems. Our projects are large, some spanning decades, across dams, infrastructure, water, commercial and land development. We stay close to the design and own the technical thinking, from early advice through to construction.
As we grow, we’re hiring engineering geologists and senior engineering geologists in Auckland, Christchurch and Waihi.
The opportunities:
Engineering Geologist
You want to be in the field, run your own jobs and own the ground model our designs are built on. You’ll plan and supervise investigations, log to a standard that stands up to scrutiny, manage jobs commercially and supervise construction of our designs. That’s where the ground either behaves as you predicted or it doesn’t.
Senior Engineering Geologist
You want technical and commercial ownership and you enjoy complex ground problems. You’ll set investigation strategy on major projects, own the ground models, sign off the interpretation that leaves the office, and bring our graduate and intermediate staff through to chartership.
At either level, you’ll work in a close, technical team alongside specialists and senior decision makers on dam, tailings, water and infrastructure projects across New Zealand and Australia. These are field-focused roles, with blocks of time away on sites including remote and mine locations.
What you’ll do
For both levels:
You’ll be trusted to do your best work, close to senior decision makers, on projects that matter. Alongside a competitive salary, you’ll get:

What you’ll do

- Lead active fault and landslide investigations supporting slope stability, liquefaction and seismic assessment.
- Carry out dam, tailings, levee and slope safety inspections, and contribute to dam safety reviews.
- Advise clients and design teams on ground risk, constructability and value engineering, and contribute to proposals and bids.
For both levels:
- A degree in engineering geology, geology, geological engineering or a related discipline.
- Hands-on logging of CPT, sonic, rotary core and test pits, with the confidence to direct a driller and hold quality at the rig.
- Experience running jobs independently and supervising works against a design.
- Core-GS or equivalent, Leapfrog, QGIS or ArcGIS, and CAD.
- A clean NZ driver licence, 4WD confidence and flexibility for extended fieldwork.
- Resilience with complex problems and a commitment to keep learning.
- Two to six years’ post-graduate experience in ground investigation and logging.
- Working towards PEngGeol or CPEng, with our support.
- Minimum eight years’ experience, including infrastructure, water, dam or mining projects.
- PEngGeol or CPEng, or close to it.
- Strong project management, including commercial accountability and team coordination.
- A track record of resolving differing ground conditions on site and carrying through producer statements.
- Familiarity with NZGS guidelines, MBIE guidance, NZS 1170.5 and NZ consenting.
- Geotechnical analysis software experience.

- Mentoring, training, conferences and a clear pathway to chartership and specialisation.
- A social club and regular team events.
- Challenging projects with high-impact clients in New Zealand and Australia.
