Start your engineering career underground – and learn the operation before you engineer it.

If you studied Mechanical or Civil Engineering because you wanted to understand how things work in the real world, solve practical problems and be close to where the action happens, underground mining might not be the career path you originally pictured.

It could be exactly what you're looking for.

About Byrnecut

The Byrnecut Group employs more than 6,000 people across Byrnecut Australia, Byrnecut International and our specialist subsidiaries, including Quattro, Fuze, Jetcrete, Raising Australia, Mining Plus, Sano and Murray Engineering. Together, our businesses provide a broad range of mining and technical services to the resources sector in Australia and internationally.

These role sits within Byrnecut Australia, one of Australia’s leading underground mining contractors.

Our clients own the mines. We help operate them.

Our teams work underground every day delivering the people, equipment, technical expertise and operational capability required to safely develop and operate complex underground mines.

About the Graduate Pathway

This isn't a graduate program designed to keep you behind a desk.

You'll begin your Byrnecut career on site, gaining hands-on exposure to underground mining operations and working alongside the crews responsible for delivering them.

Following the structure of our established graduate program, you'll gain exposure across key areas of the underground mining cycle, which may include roles such as Truck Operator, Service Crew, Charge-up, Bogger Operator and Driller.

You'll see first-hand how underground mines operate: how crews work together, how equipment and infrastructure perform in a live production environment, and how decisions around safety, productivity, cost and planning affect what happens at the face.

It's practical experience designed to give you something difficult to learn from a textbook or an office: a genuine understanding of the operation you're ultimately there to support.

As your experience develops, the pathway is intended to transition into Project Engineering, where you'll begin combining that operational knowledge with your engineering capability.

Where Could It Take You?

Project Engineers at Byrnecut work at the intersection of engineering, operations and project delivery.

Over time, your career may see you involved in areas such as:

  • Providing engineering and technical support to underground operations

  • Supporting safe, efficient and productive contract delivery

  • Analysing operational and production performance

  • Improving equipment and personnel utilisation

  • Supporting planning, budgets, forecasts and project reporting

  • Managing costs, KPIs and production targets

  • Working with Project Managers, operational teams, clients, suppliers and contractors

  • Identifying practical opportunities to improve safety, productivity and performance

  • Supporting the successful delivery of major underground mining contracts

And you may discover another direction along the way.

Some people are drawn to the engineering and project side. Others find they thrive in the operational environment and want to lead teams and operations.

Byrnecut offers long-term career pathways across both.
