Interested in joining the investigations team that contributes to disrupting and dismantling transnational organised crime groups involved in drug trafficking?

  • Lead complex investigations targeting organised crime
  • Coach and mentor investigators in a high-performing team
  • Protect New Zealand communities from drug-related harm

Our Customs Investigators are at the heart of preventing drugs from reaching our communities and putting a stop to the harm they cause to New Zealand. We're looking for someone with investigative and leadership skills to join our Wellington based Drug Investigations team.

About this role:

We have a Senior Customs Officer (SCO G2) investigator role available in Wellington.  We're looking for people who care about their team, who are approachable, supportive and willing to help. You will be a coach and mentor to your colleagues, so an interest in the development of others is important, and you will also be expected to lead operational activity and prosecution work to a high standard.

You will primarily be based in Wellington CBD, although you will be out in the field and working in diverse environments, and at times unpredictable hours. On occasion, there is also the requirement to travel outside Wellington, often at short notice. Ongoing training is required for the role, the majority requiring travel to Auckland or Christchurch.

The salary range for this role is $83,889 - $107,897 plus an annual allowance of $16,481 for working unpredictable hours.

About you:

We're looking for highly motivated and self-driven investigators who care about their team, work well with others and have genuine interest in helping the Investigations team succeed. You will offer effective problem solving and decision-making capabilities and be able to mitigate risks effectively. Having excellent interpersonal skills, using both verbal and non-verbal communication techniques to ensure clarity of message and achieve the desired result are essential. You take opportunities and run with them, requiring little input from your supervisor and report up when needed. As a SCO G2, you will be the ‘go to’ person in the team and must prioritise time-critical workloads ensuring deadlines are met.

To be successful in this role you will:

  • Have previous and up to date knowledge of investigations
  • Have an enforcement background ideally with some experience planning and leading operational investigations activity
  • Have proven experience in working with business partners, internal and external
  • Be able to problem solve real-time in difficult and challenging situations
  • Have excellent relationship management skills
  • Have in-depth knowledge and experience in applying various legislation such as, Criminal Disclosure Act, Search and Surveillance Act, Customs and Excise Act, Misuse of Drugs Act, Bill of Rights Act and Crimes Act
  • Be methodical and dedicated to working to a high standard, and with the utmost care
  • Have sound judgement and levelheadedness - you'll be able to handle sensitive information and situations well, and stay calm and composed in challenging situations
  • Be able to demonstrate previous coaching, mentoring and leadership ideally within an investigations/enforcement environment
  • Be flexible and agile

What you'll be doing:

You will be responsible for a full range of investigative activities, including:

  • Planning and leading operational activity
  • Leading large and complex investigations
  • Prioritising multiple investigations at various stages of the investigation and prosecution
  • Coaching and mentoring team members
  • Undertaking inquiries, interviews, and arresting offenders
  • Managing evidence and preparing files to an evidential standard
  • Applying for and executing search warrants
  • Preparing prosecution files and giving evidence in court - being a confident public speaker is important for this role
  • Working out in the field and in diverse environments, and at times working unpredictable hours (such as long hours, weekends and public holidays, and travelling at short notice)

What's involved:

As part of the recruitment process, you will need to pass a medical test and the NZ Police Physical Competency Test (PCT). The PCT is a timed obstacle course, requiring you to do a variety of tasks from climbing a wall, to dragging a weight, to jumping through a window.

You will need to obtain Confidential level national security clearance.

You must have a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service towards a recommendation of suitability for security clearance at a higher level.

Already having Confidential clearance is a benefit, but not a requirement.

How to apply:

Please apply online. The online application process takes a bit of time and we will ask you some questions relevant to the role. It's best to set aside some time when you won't be interrupted.

If progressed in the recruitment process, you will be asked to complete online testing and video interviews. You may then be invited to attend an assessment and panel interview.
