About the role
We are looking for a senior mechatronics engineer to help take our robot platform to the next level. Our ideal candidate will be an excellent systems thinker who isn't afraid to get stuck into a challenging problem and provide solutions that meet and exceed expectations. You have designed great electro-mechanical products and taken them to market. You are a passionate mechatronics or mechanical engineer with strong experience in designing, prototyping and manufacturing products, optimising for great physical and mechanical design, sound electrical integration and good control and safety logic.
Key responsibilities
Design and 3D CAD robotic systems and related mechanical designs, analyse them and improve them, and produce production drawings, working with others in our Robot Chassis Team
Conduct FEA analyses, and perform associated engineering calculations to back your designs
Rapid prototyping of robotic designs using a mix of off the shelf parts you've sourced, and custom fabricated parts you've 3D-printed in our in-house farm, or outsourced to be made
Running, tuning and debugging robot prototypes, using your controls knowledge to get the very best performance and safety out of the build
Ensure accurate and complete product specifications, 2D drawings, tolerances, and manufacturing requirements for suppliers
Maintain a high level of communication with local and international suppliers
Creating and running short and long term test programmes on components and whole robots to ensure repeatability and quality
Run good practice engineering processes such as FMECA, systems diagrams
Helping to write detailed project plans
Working with standards to ensure our products are safe and compliant
About you
5+ years of relevant career experience in mechatronic, mechanical design and engineering, or closely related fields
Bachelor's Degree with Honours, or higher in mechatronics engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline
Strong 3D-CAD skills (e.g. Onshape, Solidworks, Inventor, NX), including experience with large models, use of master models, and FEA, taking those designs to manufacturing and market
Great mechanical design skills including design for manufacture, tolerancing, calculating for kinematics and dynamics
Experience in the design and development of drives, power transfer and gear mechanisms, bearings, seals, springs etc
Good analysis skills including the ability to lay down calculations in spreadsheet templates for reuse
Experience integrating mechanical, electrical, sensing, actuation, and software subsystems into complete systems
Hands-on workshop experience in building, testing and debugging electro-mechanical robotic systems or similar
Great research, documentation, project planning skills
Some optional skills and experience that would be interesting:
Designing and implementing closed-loop control systems and strategies in robotic or automation applications, making the best of sensors.
Programming and scripting in robotic or automation systems using Python, C, or similar languages, including hardware interfaces, automation, etc.
Robotic simulation packages (e.g. Isaacsim, Gazebo, MuJoCo, etc)
Reliability and endurance testing for of systems and components, analysing failures and implementing design improvements.
Benefits
Good office environment in Petone, near Jackson St and waterfront with shower, kitchen and food appliances
Free car parking and indoor bike parking space, snacks, espresso coffee and tea
Regular social and team-building activities
Flexible Work-From-Home policy up to 2 days per week
Company subsidised health insurance (Southern Cross)
About us
We are building robots to reset public spaces such as food courts, offices, and auditoriums, by autonomously tidying and cleaning them. We're proud to call the coolest little capital of the world our home: Wellington, New Zealand. Our office in Bangalore, India is key to our software development.
