Northland - Far North, Kaipara and Whangarei

Make a meaningful difference. Support positive behaviour change. Help build safer futures for whānau.

The Fono is seeking a motivated and compassionate Kaimahi to join our Family Violence Services team in Northland.

This is an opportunity to work alongside men on a journey towards positive behavioural change, supporting them to recognise the impact of their actions, take accountability, and develop healthier relationships with their whānau and communities.

Working within a culturally responsive and whānau-centred approach, you will provide practical support, guidance and encouragement to help men make sustainable changes and reduce the risk of family violence.

We are looking for someone who can build trusting relationships, confidently navigate challenging conversations, and maintain a strong focus on accountability, safety, and positive outcomes for women, children, and whānau.

This role suits someone with experience or an interest in family violence prevention, rehabilitation, corrections, probation, reintegration, or community-based support services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build trusting, professional relationships with men from diverse backgrounds, including those with complex needs and challenging life experiences.

  • Support men to recognise the impact of their behaviour, take responsibility for their actions and work towards sustainable change.

  • Develop, implement and review individualised behaviour change and support plans.

  • Support clients to strengthen their social skills, develop healthy relationships and improve their connection with whānau and communities.

  • Facilitate sessions involving whānau where appropriate and safe.

  • Apply culturally responsive approaches informed by Pacific and Māori values, tikanga and protocols.

  • Work collaboratively with whānau, community organisations and partner agencies.

  • Ensure the safety and wellbeing of women, children and whānau remain central to all decision-making.

  • Maintain accurate case notes, client records, documentation and reporting.

  • Identify, manage and escalate risks appropriately.

  • Participate in service development, quality assurance, supervision, training and continuous improvement activities.

Please note: This role does not provide crisis response or specialist mental health, addictions, housing or food insecurity services.

About You

We are looking for someone who can build rapport, establish trust and work confidently with people from diverse backgrounds and life experiences. You will be comfortable navigating challenging conversations, maintaining professional boundaries and supporting individuals to take responsibility for their actions.

You will bring:

  • Relevant experience in social services, community support, rehabilitation, corrections, mentoring or a related field.

  • Experience in case management, client engagement, mentoring or facilitating individual or group sessions.

  • The ability to engage effectively with men who may have complex backgrounds, challenging behaviours or barriers to positive change.

  • Confidence in addressing difficult issues while maintaining empathy, professionalism and accountability.

  • An understanding of family violence, behaviour change and the importance of keeping women and children's safety at the centre of practice.

  • Strong relationship-building, communication and problem-solving skills.

  • An understanding of Pacific cultures, values and protocols, with a willingness to develop your cultural capability.

  • The ability to work collaboratively with whānau, community organisations and partner agencies.

  • Strong written communication, documentation and computer skills.

  • A willingness to participate in supervision, professional development and reflective practice.

  • A full New Zealand driver's licence and the ability to travel across Northland as required.

Experience and Qualifications

The following would be an advantage:

  • Experience working with men involved in the justice system, including those transitioning from prison into the community.

  • Experience in corrections, probation, rehabilitation, reintegration or community-based support services.

  • Experience delivering family violence or behaviour change programmes.

  • A tertiary qualification in social work, counselling, psychology, social services or a related discipline.

  • Experience working with Pacific and/or Māori communities.

  • Pacific language skills.
