About us

2 Cheap Cars is one of New Zealand's leading used vehicle retailers, committed to delivering quality vehicles at competitive prices. Our operations rely on efficient vehicle reconditioning, high workmanship standards, and a process-driven culture.

We are looking for an experienced Panel & Paint Supervisor to lead our workshop team and drive quality, productivity, and operational excellence.

About the role

To lead the Panel & Paint department and own the Buffing & Grooming process, so that every vehicle is repaired, refinished and presented to a consistent high standard, on time and at the lowest cost consistent with that standard, in a workshop that is safe, well maintained and compliant.

Key responsibilities

  • Supervise, allocate and prioritise the daily workload of panel beaters, spray painters and buffing and grooming staff to meet production targets and vehicle turnaround times.

  • Set clear expectations for output, quality and conduct; monitor individual productivity and give regular feedback and coaching.

  • Train and develop team members, including induction of new starters and multi-skilling across panel, paint and grooming.

  • Manage rosters, attendance and leave cover within the department in liaison with the Operations Manager and HR.

  • Address performance and conduct issues early, and escalate to the Operations Manager and HR in line with company policy.

  • Assess incoming vehicles, determine the repair method and estimate labour and materials before work starts.

  • Ensure all repairs follow best-practice repair methods and company procedures.

  • Carry out quality checks at key stages (pre-paint, post-paint and pre-release), including colour match, finish, panel gaps, overspray and masking.

  • Own the buffing and grooming process: maintain the standard operating procedure, checklists, work sequence and time standards, and ensure staff follow them.

  • Lead health and safety in the department in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and company Health & Safety Policies and Procedures.

  • Monitor productivity, report on KPIs, and drive continuous improvement across the department.

About you

  • Minimum five years of trade experience in panel and paint.

  • At least two years in a leading hand, foreman or supervisory role (preferred).

  • Comprehensive knowledge of panel, structural and refinishing repair processes.

  • Sound knowledge of paint systems, colour matching, and diagnosis and correction of paint defects.

  • Knowledge of machine polishing, paint correction and vehicle grooming standards.

  • Working knowledge of spray booth operation and maintenance requirements.

  • Proven ability to lead, motivate and hold a team accountable.

  • Strong organisational, planning and time management skills.

  • Current clean Driver Licence required (minimum Restricted).
