Lead the business behind Tauranga's orthopaedic surgeons
About us
Orthopaedic Services Limited (OSL) is a co-operative of Bay of Plenty orthopaedic surgeons who have chosen to work together. We believe we are stronger, smarter and more effective together than apart, and our vision is to be the partner of choice in orthopaedics, combining surgical excellence with operational scale.
Behind the co-operative sits the company, owned by its shareholder surgeons. We hold the ACC elective surgery contract and other funding contracts, contract the surgeons, anaesthetists and facilities who deliver care across the Bay of Plenty, and run the Fracture Clinic, all from Grace Orthopaedic Centre. We share the same commitments: put patients first, thrive together, be good humans, create strong alliances and build a legacy.
The company has a strong history, with almost 30 years of experience. We’re in great shape, with strong systems, good policies and a capable team. Over the next three years we expect the Bay of Plenty market to grow from one facility to three or four, and we need a leader to take us there.
The role
This isn’t a typical GM role. You’ll keep the co-operative strong and the company that serves it commercially sound. That means building trust, fairness and a shared identity across independent surgeons, while securing, pricing and delivering funder contracts so every partner has a sustainable, fair financial base.
You’ll be responsible for culture across the centre and for a small but mighty team, and you’ll move from setting strategy to getting hands-on and making it happen. Success is built on trust, integrity and sound commercial judgement.
You'll:
Lead the full contract lifecycle with ACC, Health NZ and other funders, from bid to renewal, including GETS tenders.
Set pricing, own budgets and management accounts, and protect our financial performance.
Partner with the Board on strategy, including positioning OSL for new facilities, and make sure decisions turn into action.
Build trusted relationships with each of our surgeons, keeping decisions fair and focused on the benefit of the whole group.
Build strong partnerships with Grace Hospital, new facilities and other critical suppliers.
Lead a small, capable team across the centre and our clinics.
Keep us compliant, from health and safety to privacy and the Code of Rights, and work with clinical leads on clinical governance.
Move our technology forward, including a new practice management system, and adopt practical tools, including AI, that improve efficiency.
About you
A strong commercial background: you can read a contract, build a price and write a bid from start to finish.
Confident with a P&L and management accounts. You don’t need to be an accountant, but you understand accruals.
Experience working with surgeons or medical specialists. You understand how they think, and you can guide, encourage and hold a firm line.
A patient, tactful relationship builder who leads a team and complex stakeholder relationships through credibility and trust rather than title and is comfortable across both strategy and detail.
Health sector experience, especially private health or ACC, is a real advantage. If you're managing a large or complex practice and you're ready for the next step, we'd love to hear from you.
