We are looking for a Principal Consultant to join our Corrosion and Protection (CAP) Team at Lumen, who knows corrosion and coatings inside out. Aligning with the inception of our industry in that ‘corrosion never stops’, well - neither do we, in our continued commitment to delivering professional consultancy services that protect and extend the life of our clients' assets.

WHO IS LUMEN?

We are a team of specialist engineers and consultants who care a great deal about doing great work. Lumen is a fully employee-owned business, and we are truly independent - delivering services with honesty and integrity. We have dedicated service units supporting:

Lines Engineering - Our skilled team of engineers can design new lines, upgrade existing lines, offer technical advice, and provide construction monitoring.

Civil & Structural - With everything under one roof, we offer practical and coordinated civil & structural engineering services for developers, architects and homeowners.

Energy & Carbon - Our energy & carbon team helps businesses reduce their energy costs and decarbonise for a more efficient, greener future.

Our Corrosion and Protection (CAP) team, headquartered in Christchurch, covers a wide variety of projects throughout New Zealand’s heavy-duty coatings industry, including Power & Energy generation, Infrastructure & Civil Engineering, Marine & Offshore, Oil & Gas. Our inspectors hold various qualifications, including AMPP (NACE) Level 1-3 and CBIP certifications.

We work as a genuinely close team and company, leveraging our shared knowledge to enrich our people and our clients. We are committed to developing our people so they can succeed and deliver success. Our core values, “Entrepreneurship, Adaptability, Relationships, Transparency and Happiness,” are ones we all truly live.

THE ROLE

This is a senior role for someone who really knows their craft. You will be comfortable being out in the field with your sleeves rolled up, sitting at a desk creating highly technical reports, being the person clients lean on for advice, mentoring younger engineers and inspectors, and helping bring new work through the door. It is a real chance to shape how this work gets done in New Zealand.

We would prefer you to be based in the North Island, but if you are the right person, we will happily talk with you wherever you are, as the right person and right fit is most important to us.

What you'll be doing

  • Running coating inspections and corrosion investigations of every kind, condition assessments, NDT (DFT, adhesion, holiday detection), writing specifications, acting as a coating superintendent, and getting to the bottom of coating failures and how to fix them

  • Working across all three of our areas - Energy, Protective and Marine

  • Being the person clients and colleagues come to with the hard problems

  • Taking work from proposal and tender through to a delivered project - on budget, on time, to spec -  including client liaison, variations, invoicing and reporting

  • Mentoring graduates and colleagues, and reviewing their reports so the whole team keeps growing and getting better

  • Helping to shape where the CAP team go next, and bringing new ideas, innovation and technology into how we work

  • Building and looking after your own client relationships in your region

What you'll bring

  • AMPP CIP Level 2 or Level 3 (formerly NACE CIP2 / CIP3) - this one is essential

  • Real depth in corrosion and coatings, the kind of judgment that only comes from time in the field and on challenging projects. Certification is one thing, but competency is the true difference and a must have

  • Someone who is just as happy working solo, as they are being in a team, self-motivated and able to run their own week, but they need to be a team player, not a lone wolf

  • A genuine willingness to turn your hand to any part of coating inspection and corrosion investigation processes, across all fields

  • Happy with fieldwork and travel around New Zealand (and the odd overseas trip), including working at heights and in confined spaces

  • A good commercial and contractual head, comfortable with proposals, tenders and budgets (knowing your way around Engineering NZ / ACENZ short-form agreements is a bonus)

  • Accurate, careful work delivered on time

  • A real passion for this industry, and a wish to work somewhere that takes the job seriously but still has a good laugh doing it

WHY LUMEN

  • Employee-owned - there is a genuine path to becoming a shareholder and sharing in what you help build

  • Real flexibility - North Island preferred, but we will talk to the right person wherever they are

  • A supportive, down-to-earth team that backs each other - ‘Happiness’ is one of our values for a reason

  • A business that keeps up with the tools of the trade - digital field reporting and AI where it earns its place

  • A senior seat with room to grow into more over time

  • Competitive pay that matches your experience and the seniority of the role
