Join a New Zealand Engineering Success Story

JMP Engineering is a proudly New Zealand-owned engineering and manufacturing company that has been designing and building world-class automation, robotic palletising and material handling systems since 1972. We design, manufacture and install complex automation solutions that are exported around the world.

An opportunity has become available for an experienced Purchasing Officer to join our team following the retirement of a long-serving team member.

This is a key role within our Operations team, responsible for ensuring engineering materials, components and services are available when required to support our engineering and manufacturing teams in delivering quality outcomes for our customers.

This role will suit someone who enjoys being hands-on within an engineering and manufacturing environment, is comfortable working alongside engineers, production staff, stores personnel and suppliers, and understands how effective purchasing and inventory management contribute directly to business success.

This is a full-time, on-site position based at our Avondale facility, working Monday to Friday. The nature of the role requires regular interaction with our engineering, manufacturing and stores teams, making a physical presence on-site essential.

About the Role

Reporting to the Operations Manager, you will be responsible for the day-to-day purchasing, inventory planning and supplier coordination activities that support our engineering, manufacturing and assembly operations.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Purchasing materials, components and services for production and project requirements

  • Reviewing requisitions, engineering drawings and Bills of Materials (BOMs)

  • Building strong supplier relationships and negotiating lead times that align with business requirements

  • Identifying, evaluating and onboarding new suppliers to improve cost, quality, availability and lead-time performance

  • Following up outstanding orders and ensuring materials arrive on time

  • Maintaining accurate purchasing and inventory data within the company's ERP system

  • Monitoring inventory consumption and physical stock levels to ensure material availability

  • Reviewing upcoming workload and material demand to ensure procurement and inventory requirements are planned well in advance of production requirements

  • Coordinating with Stores on the receipt and allocation of purchased items

  • Assisting with kitting and inventory allocation for production

  • Working closely with engineers, production teams and project stakeholders

  • Identifying opportunities for process improvements, cost savings and supply-chain efficiencies

About You

We are looking for someone who can confidently bridge the gap between the office, engineers, stores and suppliers. Just as importantly, you're a positive, hands-on team player who enjoys taking ownership, building relationships, solving problems and finding better ways of doing things.

While experience is important, we're equally interested in someone who brings energy, initiative and a genuine willingness to contribute to the success of the business.

Ideally, you will have:

  • A positive, can-do attitude with the drive and initiative to follow things through and achieve results

  • Proven purchasing and inventory management experience within an engineering, manufacturing or technical environment

  • The ability to read and understand engineering drawings and Bills of Materials (BOMs)

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build effective relationships with engineers, production staff, suppliers and other stakeholders

  • Experience managing suppliers, identifying new sourcing opportunities and evaluating supplier performance

  • Strong organisational, planning and problem-solving skills, with good commercial awareness and attention to detail

  • Experience using ERP systems and Microsoft Office applications

  • A proactive approach, willingness to learn and a desire to contribute ideas and continuous improvement initiatives

  • An understanding of how purchasing and inventory performance directly impacts production, project delivery and customer outcomes

Why Join JMP Engineering?

  • Be part of a well-established New Zealand engineering company with over 50 years of success and customers around the globe.

  • An opportunity to make a genuine impact in a role where your ideas, initiative and contribution will be valued.

  • Work alongside experienced engineers, project managers and manufacturing professionals.

  • Play a critical role in supporting project delivery and business performance.

  • Join a collaborative, practical and down-to-earth team environment.

  • Convenient Avondale location with onsite parking.
