Description / Position Overview

Analyst  I - Sales Tax

The Sales Tax Office is seeking a detail-oriented Analyst I with a strong foundation in accounting, financial analysis, and data reporting. This position primarily handles construction-related financial reviews, including analyzing project costs, invoices, tax payments, refunds, exemptions, and supporting documentation. Additional responsibilities include financial reconciliations, recurring and ad hoc reporting, data validation, trend and variance analysis, and review of tax and financial records.

The Analyst I works within established procedures and under general direction, using Microsoft Excel, SQL or database query tools, and other analytical applications to support accurate financial reporting and tax administration. This position is subject to budget required furloughs to be implemented in the 2026 calendar year.

As an Analyst I, you will:

  • Conduct construction-related financial reviews by analyzing invoices, contracts, project costs, tax payments, refunds, exemptions, and supporting documentation; perform reconciliations, identify discrepancies or missing information, and document findings.
  • Gather, organize, validate, and reconcile financial and tax data from databases, financial systems, spreadsheets, bank information, and taxpayer records; research and document discrepancies involving tax returns, payments, deposits, receivable activity, and related financial information.
  • Prepare and analyze recurring and ad hoc financial, statistical, and operational reports using Microsoft Excel, SQL, database queries, reporting tools, and other analytical applications to identify trends, variances, anomalies, and unusual activity, and clearly summarize findings for management and other City departments.
  • Support month-end financial reporting by validating financial information, researching differences, and preparing supporting schedules and variance explanations.
  • Review amended returns, refund requests, account adjustments, and supporting financial documentation for accuracy and compliance with established procedures.
  • Perform data-integrity and quality-assurance reviews and support testing and validation of system reports, data corrections, and procedural changes.
  • Maintain organized workpapers and documentation, respond to routine financial and data requests, and recommend practical improvements to reporting, reconciliation, and operational processes.
  • Other duties as assigned.
