About the role
The AV APD Adjuster resolves first-party and third-party vehicle damage and property damage claims involving autonomous and driver-assist vehicles. The role moves quickly on repairable and total-loss files, and applies extra care to sensor, camera, and software-dependent components that traditional appraisal does not cover.
What you'll do
- Investigate and decide coverage, liability, and damages on assigned APD and property damage claims, using vehicle data and video to confirm whether the system or a human was in control
- Direct inspections and repairs, including calibration of cameras, lidar, radar, and other driver-assistance or automated-driving hardware after a loss
- Evaluate total-loss versus repair, valuation, salvage, and rental or loss-of-use exposure for specialty and purpose-built vehicles
- Preserve vehicle data before repair or release, and coordinate access with the operator or manufacturer
- Identify and refer subrogation and recovery opportunities, including against manufacturers, suppliers, and other operators
- Negotiate with repair facilities, body shops, and third-party carriers; control severity and cycle time
- Flag potential bodily injury, litigation, or regulatory-reporting exposure to the BI adjuster, litigation adjuster, or Team Lead within the same day
- Keep reserves current and file notes complete and audit-ready
Who you are
- Detailed understanding of the SAE J3016 levels of driving automation (Levels 0–5), including the difference between driver-assist (Levels 0–2) and driverless (Levels 3–5) systems, and how each level shifts responsibility between the human, the system, and the operator
- Determine who or what was in control at the time of loss: human driver, driver-assist feature, or automated driving system
- Request, preserve, and read AV evidence: telematics, event data, camera and sensor footage, remote-assistance logs, and software version
- Apply coverage, liability, and damages analysis across fleet-operator, manufacturer, supplier, and third-party exposures
- Work with AV operator safety, legal, and risk teams under tight response timelines
- Meet federal and state crash-reporting, privacy, and data-handling requirements for AV incidents
- Document files so a supervisor, carrier, or auditor can follow the liability decision
Qualifications
- 2–4+ years of auto physical damage or commercial auto claims experience
- Working knowledge of estimating platforms, ADAS calibration, and total-loss valuation
- Comfort reading event data, dash-camera video, and operator incident reports
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent claims experience
- Active adjuster license(s) as required by the states handled, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
- Proficiency in the claims system, document management, and Microsoft Office
- Clear written and verbal communication with claimants, counsel, carriers, and client partners
Benefits
- Generous health-insurance package with nationwide coverage, vision, & dental
- 401(k) retirement plan with employer matching
- Competitive PTO policy – we want our employees fresh, healthy, happy, and energized!
- Generous family leave policy after 8 months of continuous work
- 100% remote (home-based) role designed to support your work-life balance
Additionally, we will
- Listen to your feedback to enhance and improve upon the long-standing challenges of an adjuster and the claims role
- Work toward reducing and eliminating all the administrative work from an adjuster role
- Foster a culture of empathy, transparency, and empowerment in a remote-first environment
