Senior Engineering Geologist

Geotechnical, Earthquake and Dam Specialists

At EGL, we strive to see beyond. We are a New Zealand based, engineer-led consultancy with a strong focus on technical excellence and tackling highly complex problems.

Our projects are large; some spanning multiple decades and requiring deep technical judgment, continuity and close collaboration with clients and project partners.

Our team brings specialist dam engineering expertise, alongside broad experience across infrastructure, water, commercial, and land development sectors. We take pride in being close to the design, owning the technical thinking, and helping shape solutions from early advice through to construction. We encourage our people to think deeply, build strong technical capability, and understand our clients’ drivers so we can deliver solutions that combine technical rigour with practical judgement that endure. At EGL, learning and growth never stops.

As we continue to grow, we are seeking engineering geologists to join our team based in Auckland, Christchurch and Waihi.

The opportunity
This role will suit a senior engineering geologist who wants technical and commercial ownership of their work, enjoys complex ground problems, and is motivated by the opportunity to shape how ground risk is understood and managed on significant projects.

You will set the investigation strategy on major projects, own the ground models our designs are built on, and be accountable for the quality and defensibility of the geological interpretation that leaves the office. You will manage jobs independently from proposal to close-out, lead the construction supervision of EGL-designed works, and bring our graduate and intermediate staff through to chartership.

You will contribute to a strong pipeline of dam, tailings, water and infrastructure projects across New Zealand, with opportunities to support work in Australia and further afield.

At EGL, you will be part of a close, technically focused team where your contribution is visible and valued. This is not a desk role - you will be involved across the full project lifecycle, from understanding the problem and framing the ground risk, through investigation and design support, to construction and the client conversations that go with it.

What you will do
  • Lead the engineering geological input to major projects; setting investigation strategy, defining the ground model, and confirming it is fit for the decisions it supports.
  • Independently project manage multiple concurrent jobs; fee proposals, resourcing, programme, budget and work in progress, contractor procurement, variations, risk and client reporting, with accountability for commercial outcome.
  • Lead construction supervision of EGL-designed works; earthworks, retaining structures, ground improvement, slope stabilisation, embankment and dam construction and foundations. Make the call when ground conditions differ from those assumed in design, agree the response with the design engineer, and carry the documentation through to producer statements.
  • Direct ground investigations, set the logging standard for each job, and review the output of others against it.
  • Provide technical review and sign-off of logs, ground models, geological profiles and investigation reports prepared by other staff.
  • Lead engineering geological and geomorphic mapping, landslide and active fault investigations, and interpretations supporting slope stability, liquefaction and seismic assessment.
  • Conduct dam, tailings storage facility, levee and slope safety inspections, and contribute to dam safety reviews.
  • Provide expert advice to clients and design teams — early-stage advice, ground risk framing, constructability and value engineering.
  • Mentor and develop graduate and intermediate engineering geologists, and support their pathway to chartership.
  • Build trusted client relationships and contribute to proposals, bids and EGL growth.

What you will bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering geology, geology, geological engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • Eight to fifteen years’ experience in engineering geology and ground investigation, with exposure to infrastructure, water, dam or mining projects.
  • Chartership: you have attained, or are close to attaining, PEngGeol or CPEng.
  • Experienced in independently managing engineering projects, including commercial accountability, stakeholder management and team coordination.
  • A track record of supervising geotechnical or civil works against a design, including resolving differing ground conditions and producer statement documentation.
  • New Zealand practice: familiarity with NZGS guidelines, MBIE guidance, NZS 1170.5 and the New Zealand consenting environment.
  • Software: Core-GS or equivalent, Leapfrog, QGIS or ArcGIS, and geotechnical analysis software.
  • You lean into challenges and demonstrate resilience in complex problem-solving.
  • Commitment to continual learning: you are keen to engage in professional development and continue to grow your career.
  • Flexibility to travel: you are able to travel outside Auckland for site visits, fieldwork and construction supervision.
