Tekron, a Microchip Technology Incorporated company, is a leading developer of precision GPS/GNSS clocks and time synchronisation solutions used in critical infrastructure around the world. Our products support applications across national power grids, telecommunications networks, enterprise systems, and other advanced network environments in more than 80 countries.

As part of Microchip's Frequency and Timing Division, the Tekron team works within a global engineering environment focused on developing the next generation of precision timing technologies.

Job Description:

Microchip’s Frequency and Timing Systems Business Unit is the world’s leading source of precise timing and synchronization solutions. We are seeking a Senior Application / Interface Layer Software Engineer to develop and maintain software interfaces for embedded systems products. This role focuses on application-layer and management-plane software running on dedicated hardware platforms.

The ideal candidate has strong experience building embedded software interfaces and APIs, understands systems-level communication protocols, and brings a disciplined approach to secure software design. You will work closely with firmware, platform, networking, and product engineering teams to deliver reliable, maintainable, and secure interface-layer functionality for a focused product portfolio.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and maintain application-layer and interface-layer software for embedded systems

  • Implement and support management and control interfaces using technologies such as gNMI, REST, gRPC, and related APIs

  • Develop software components that enable configuration, telemetry, monitoring, and device management capabilities

  • Collaborate with firmware and systems engineers to integrate software across hardware and platform layers

  • Design software with a strong emphasis on reliability, performance, maintainability, and secure operation

  • Participate in architecture reviews and contribute to secure design decisions throughout the product lifecycle

  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex system integration and interface issues

  • Develop unit tests, integration tests, and automation tools to validate software behavior

  • Create and maintain technical documentation, API definitions, and design specifications

  • Support software bring-up, debugging, and product validation activities

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience with embedded or systems-level products

  • Strong programming skills in C++, C, PHP, or Python

  • Experience developing and integrating APIs such as gNMI and REST

  • Understanding of embedded Linux environments and systems programming concepts

  • Experience with IPC mechanisms, networking protocols, and device management interfaces

  • Strong understanding of secure software design principles and secure coding practices

  • Familiarity with authentication, encryption, access control, and secure communication methods

  • Experience debugging software on embedded hardware platforms

  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with network devices, telecom systems, or embedded infrastructure products

  • Familiarity with YANG models, protobufs, gRPC, or NETCONF

  • Experience with cross-compilation, build systems, and embedded toolchains

  • Knowledge of low-level networking concepts and telemetry systems

  • Experience with automated testing frameworks and CI pipelines for embedded products

  • Exposure to real-time or resource-constrained system environments

Competency:

  • Strategic/Critical Thinking—Systematically solves problems and hypothesizes possible client pain points, expectations, and implicit needs; brainstorms with team members to devise solutions to solve complex client challenges

  • Networking—Identifies the right client stakeholders and builds connections quickly to drive consensus for design wins; works cooperatively with a wide range of internal stakeholders for success

  • Ownership—Goes out of his or her way to complete a task and has relentless drive to achieve results; is independent and self-directed, and takes initiative.

  • Workflow Management—Sets clear, realistic, and time-bound objectives that align to business growth; breaks each objective into tasks and process steps that can be achieved within a realistic timeframe.

Please include a summary of your experience in embedded systems software, interface/API development, and secure software engineering.
