Client and Job:

A well-established Sydney engineering business that specialises in automated machinery for major manufacturers. They deliver end-to-end automation and compliance solutions. A permanent, full-time, but hybrid role, with site visits across different manufacturing sites, mainly FMCG / food.

As a CMSE Automation Engineer with around 5 years of experience, you'll be the technical engineer and safety champion on industrial automation projects. You'll bridge the gap between complex machinery safety regulations and hands-on engineering. You will manage the full project lifecycle, from initial client consultation and design through to final on-site commissioning.

What you will be doing:
  • Scoping & Risk Assessment. Visiting client sites to scope jobs, assess existing machinery and work out time, materials and labour, then leading machine safety risk assessments to AS/NZS 4024 to identify mechanical and electrical hazards.
  • Control & Safeguarding Design. Designing safety control systems, including physical guarding, interlocked switches, light curtains and E-stop circuits.
  • Electrical Drafting. Developing electrical schematics and panel layouts in EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, or similar, to the right safety categories (Cat 3/4, PLd/PLe).
  • PLC & Safety Programming. Programming standard and safety PLCs (such as Siemens Safety, Rockwell GuardLogix, or Pilz), safety relays, and HMI/SCADA screens that show operators system status and safety faults.
  • On-Site Commissioning. Powering up panels, testing I/O and comms, tuning machine performance, and validating every safety function, including fault testing, light curtain muting, and stop-time measurement.
  • Documentation. Compiling compliance dossiers, including safety validation reports, operation manuals, electrical test certificates and risk reduction statements.
  • Client Liaison. Being the technical go-to for clients on site, and working with project, workshop and site teams to deliver jobs on scope and on time.

What we are looking for:
  • A degree in Electrical, Mechatronic or Automation Engineering.
  • Approximately 5 years of hands-on experience in electrical engineering, industrial automation or control systems.
  • Certified Machinery Safety Expert (CMSE) qualification, or a comprehensive, practical working knowledge of AS/NZS 4024 machinery safety standards.
  • Strong proficiency in electrical drafting software (EPLAN or AutoCAD Electrical preferred).
  • Proven experience programming safety and standard PLC systems.
  • Confident communication skills, with the ability to deal directly with clients on site and manage project scopes independently.
  • Full Australian working rights, a valid driver's licence and the flexibility to travel to client sites across Sydney.
