About vWork

vWork is job scheduling and dispatch software for businesses with people in transport, logistics and field-service companies across New Zealand, Australia, the UK and Ireland. Office teams plan and dispatch the work. Drivers and field workers use our iOS and Android apps to receive jobs, capture proof of delivery, photos and signatures, and keep working when there's no signal.

We're making vWork do more of the work for our customers, so they spend less time on manual, error-prone steps and more time getting the job done. The mobile apps are where much of that happens, because they're in the hands of the people doing the job.

The role

We're looking for a mobile developer to own our iOS and Android apps. You'll take them over from our Head of Engineering, who built and ran them for the past five years. You'll get a proper handover and someone to ask while you settle in.

These are mature native apps with real users and real consequences: if sync goes wrong, a driver's proof of delivery doesn't reach the office. You'll be responsible for how they're built, tested and released, and for where they go next.

We use AI tools every day for writing code, testing and research, and we want someone who already works that way. Our team is small, so there's room to work across the rest of the platform if you want to.

What you'll do

  • Own the iOS and Android apps: features, fixes, releases and technical direction

  • Ship releases through TestFlight, the App Store, Firebase App Distribution and Google Play

  • Look after offline-first sync, so work done without signal is never lost

  • Use AI tools to move faster, while making sure you understand, review and test everything you ship

  • Write unit and UI tests, and work with our QA team on every release

  • Investigate crashes and customer-reported issues with our support and QA teams

  • Work with our backend engineers on the APIs the apps use

  • Plan and lead the apps' modernisation: more Swift and Kotlin, better test coverage, simpler releases

  • Be part of the technical escalation team

What we're looking for

  • Commercial experience building and shipping native mobile apps

  • Strong in Swift (iOS) or Kotlin (Android), with real experience on the other platform or the drive to get there quickly

  • Comfortable in long-lived code: alongside newer Swift and Kotlin, our apps have a lot of Objective-C and Java

  • You use AI coding assistants and agents every day for development and research, and can show us how. You know where they go wrong, and you check their work

  • Experience with on-device storage, background work and REST APIs

  • You take ownership. You'll be the go-to person for mobile, and you're comfortable making calls and explaining them

  • You care about the person using the app: a driver at 5am, gloves on, with patchy signal

  • Clear written and spoken communication

  • The right to work in New Zealand

Bonus points

  • Backend or web experience, such as Ruby on Rails, Java, REST API design or AWS

  • Offline sync, Core Data or SQLite, push notifications

  • CI/CD and release automation (fastlane, Gradle), and automated UI testing

Our tech

  • iOS: Swift and Objective-C, UIKit, Core Data, Swift Package Manager and CocoaPods, fastlane, Firebase

  • Android: Kotlin and Java, WorkManager, SQLite, coroutines, Firebase

  • Backend: Ruby on Rails and Java services

  • GitHub, Jira, Crashlytics, AI coding tools, monthly sprints

The team

You'll join a small, mostly senior team of three developers, two QA testers and two infrastructure engineers, reporting to the Head of Engineering.

What we offer

  • A salary that reflects your experience

  • KiwiSaver, flexible hours and autonomy to succeed

  • A direct line to the Head of Engineering, who knows these apps inside out
