St John WA has been serving the Western Australian community since 1922. Our organisation has grown into an integrated healthcare provider, connecting people across WA to lifesaving emergency services, urgent care, and health education.
We are a not-for-profit organisation, and we are committed to making a positive impact on the safety, wellbeing, and health of everyone, no matter where in WA they live. Our services are powered by more than 8,000 dedicated employees and volunteers who bring care, skill, and compassion to every corner of the state.
A Job to be proud of:
The Data Science and Analytics team at St John WA uses data analysis and visualisation tools to help the organisation make informed decisions to better serve the community.
Current team members have diverse backgrounds with qualifications including physics, mathematics, engineering, health, psychology and business, and have previously worked across the government, private, academic, consulting, and defence sectors.
An exciting opportunity is now available for an experienced Power BI developer to join our team in a permanent, full-time position based in Belmont.
We're looking for an experienced business intelligence professional who combines advanced skills in Power BI report and data model development with strong analytical thinking, stakeholder engagement and a passion for solving business problems.
What you’ll do:
Your job will be to help senior leaders and frontline staff solve problems and make better-informed decisions by analysing and visualising data. In doing so, you'll have a direct impact on the delivery of life-saving ambulance services, urgent care and first aid training across WA.
You’ll provide expert analysis and decision support, lead the development of reporting and analytics solutions, advise stakeholders on data and reporting matters, and coach and mentor other analysts.
With a particular focus on Power BI, you'll play a key role in developing high-quality, intuitive reporting products and strengthening capability across the organisation. This includes establishing consistent development practices, promoting effective governance and supporting colleagues and business users to make better use of self-service reporting.
This role is about more than building reports. You'll work closely with stakeholders to understand their challenges, assess their needs and develop practical solutions that address business problems.
This is a diverse role in which you'll work with stakeholders, business processes and complex datasets spanning operational, financial, workforce and contractual domains.
You'll be a senior member of a highly capable, motivated and collaborative team, working with stakeholders across the organisation to provide high-quality services to St John WA and the community.
In a typical day you might:
- Work with stakeholders and subject matter experts to understand business processes, investigate data sources and translate business needs into effective reporting solutions.
- Analyse and interpret complex datasets, presenting findings and recommendations in a clear and meaningful way.
- Design, develop and enhance Power BI reports and data models that translate complex information into accessible, actionable insights.
- Establish and improve Power BI development standards, governance frameworks, documentation and quality assurance practices to support consistent, reliable and sustainable reporting.
- Provide training, coaching, and quality assurance to less experienced analysts
- Proactively troubleshoot and problem solve any issues that arise
- Represent our team in key meetings to influence decisions that impact our reporting capability
- Identify and implement improvements that enable the team to operate more efficiently and/or effectively
You will have strong support from management and the broader team, and will be given the space to work proactively, innovate, and drive new initiatives.
What you’ll need:
We're looking for someone who brings together advanced Power BI expertise, strong analytical and critical thinking skills, and the ability to engage with stakeholders to solve complex business problems.
The successful candidate will be comfortable working with complex datasets, understanding how business processes and systems influence data, and translating technical information into meaningful insights for a range of audiences.
More broadly, successful candidates will demonstrate:
- Previous experience in a similar role
- Strong analytical, conceptual and critical thinking skills, with the ability to investigate complex problems, challenge assumptions and develop practical solutions
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences and influence senior stakeholders
- Strong attention to detail, organisational skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively
- Knowledge of business intelligence and analytics concepts including experience with common industry tools, as well as coding or query languages
- Advanced Power BI development skills
It is also beneficial (but not necessary) if you have:
- Experience mentoring and coaching junior analysts
- Experience developing or implementing Power BI governance frameworks, development standards or reusable reporting practices
- Experience with Fabric or Azure based data platforms
- Familiarity with project management methodologies such as PRINCE2, PMBOK or Agile
Qualifications:
Tertiary qualifications in a quantitative subject (such as mathematics, business, science, engineering, or information technology) or extensive professional experience in a relevant field
What’s in it for you?
The successful candidate will be offered a supportive and engaging working environment within a positive and professional team, along with:
- Salary packaging options
- 17.5% annual leave loading
- $550 Health and Wellness reimbursement
- Flexible working hours
- Option to work from home one day per week (after probation)
- Two additional leave days per year
- Free first aid training and emergency ambulance cover
- Free onsite parking
To apply:
Applications must include a comprehensive CV, and a cover letter of no more than two (2) pages, that clearly outlines:
- Why this opportunity interests you and your motivation to apply;
- An example of when you have needed to communicate complex, technical information to someone without domain expertise; and
- An example of a Power BI report or solution you have developed. Describe the business problem it addressed, how you engaged with stakeholders to understand their needs, and the impact or outcomes achieved.
Applicants will receive an automated receipt on application. If you have not received this email, please contact the Talent Sourcing team prior to the closing date and time. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.
Applications that do not include both a cover letter and resume may not be considered.
