Senior Solicitor/Senior Associate, Financial Services & Insolvency, 5 to 10 years PQE

Mitchell Maddox is recruiting a senior solicitor or senior associate to join the Auckland office of a leading New Zealand commercial law firm in early 2027.

For a finance or restructuring lawyer considering their next move, this opportunity offers a strong core practice, interesting commercial challenges, and room to develop.

The role will centre on restructuring and insolvency matters, working closely with industry-leading senior lawyers. You will be involved in financing arrangements and the issues that arise when businesses or lending relationships come under pressure, a combination that will appeal to someone who enjoys both the detail of a transaction and the judgement needed when the way forward is less straightforward. There is also scope to take on financial services regulatory work if that fits your interests.

In this role you could work on:

  • Banking and finance transactions - advising on institutional lending and other financing arrangements, including structuring, documenting and negotiating lending and security arrangements.

  • Debt restructuring and workouts - helping clients navigate financial pressure, renegotiate lending terms and assess options when existing arrangements are no longer workable.

  • Corporate restructuring and insolvency advisory - working through the legal and commercial issues facing distressed businesses, with a focus on practical options and achieving workable outcomes.

  • Banking and securities advice - considering lenders’ rights, borrowers’ obligations and the security arrangements that underpin financing transactions, including when those arrangements come under distress.

Financial services regulation - where this aligns with your interests, advising on regulatory obligations, investment structuranes, capital raising and financial products.

What this law firm is looking for:

You will have 5 to 10 years’ PQE and be admitted in New Zealand, ideally with experience in restructuring or insolvency work, however, any experience in banking & finance (advisory or transactional), financial regulation, or financial markets would be considered.

Strong drafting and analytical skills, sound commercial judgement and clear, practical advice will be important. You will also be comfortable managing matters, building client relationships, and working collaboratively across offices. At senior associate level, you will be ready to take greater ownership of work and support junior colleagues.

Lawyers whose interests sit primarily in financial services regulatory work are also welcome to enquire, as there may be scope for a role focused on that practice.
