About the role
Federated Farmers is the leading voice for New Zealand farmers and rural communities. We are seeking an experienced and influential leader to drive our policy and advocacy strategy and strengthen our impact on issues that matter to the primary sector.
Reporting to the Chief Executive and as a member of the Executive Leadership Team, you will lead a high-performing policy and advocacy function, shape national policy positions, and build strong relationships across government, industry and rural New Zealand.

Key responsibilities
Lead and develop a high-performing policy and advocacy team.
Drive the development of evidence-based policy positions that support profitable and sustainable farming businesses.
Develop and deliver a strategic policy programme aligned to organisational priorities and member needs.
Build trusted and influential relationships with Ministers, government agencies, local government, industry leaders and key stakeholders.
Lead advocacy initiatives that position Federated Farmers as the leading voice on rural and primary sector issues.
Oversee policy research and analysis to support informed decision-making and effective advocacy.
Provide strategic advice to the Chief Executive, National Board and elected leaders.
Contribute as a collaborative member of the Executive Leadership Team and help shape organisational strategy and culture.
About you
You will be a strategic and politically astute leader who combines strong people leadership with the ability to influence at the highest levels.
To succeed in this role, you will have:
Proven experience leading high-performing teams.
Significant experience in policy development, public affairs, advocacy, government relations or stakeholder engagement.
A genuine understanding of and passion for New Zealand's primary sector and rural communities.
Outstanding communication skills and the ability to engage effectively with a wide range of audiences.
Strong analytical capability and the ability to interpret complex issues, legislation and policy proposals.
Exceptional relationship-building and influencing skills.
Experience working with governance groups, elected representatives or membership-based organisations.
Established credibility and networks across government, industry or advocacy environments.
