Are you someone who notices when something isn’t quite right and follows it through? Bring your sound judgement, calm approach and reliability to a role that helps keep our port safe and moving.

Eastland Port connects Tairāwhiti businesses with markets beyond our region. Our Port Protection Officers help protect the people, infrastructure and operations that make those connections possible.

Two opportunities

Permanent night shift
If night work suits you, join us on a permanent four nights on, four nights off roster, working 6 pm to 6 am alongside a shift partner. You’ll have a predictable roster with four nights off between blocks of shifts.

Casual
Help cover busy periods, team training, and planned and unplanned leave. Shifts may include days, 6 am to 6 pm, and nights, 6 pm to 6 am. There is no fixed roster or guaranteed hours.

The role

Reporting to the Port Security Team Leader, you’ll work alongside a shift partner and interact with people across the wider port team.

Your shift will combine gatehouse duties, CCTV monitoring and patrols. You’ll check people, vehicles and passes entering controlled areas, help authorised port users get where they need to go, and keep accurate records and handovers.

You’ll also support harbour communications by monitoring radios and relaying information, and respond to security incidents, injuries and emergencies within your training. You may be first on the scene, so staying calm, assessing the situation and getting the right help matters.

The work calls for sustained attention during quieter periods and a prompt, practical response when things change. You’ll need a welcoming manner and the confidence to uphold standards and seek support when needed.

What you’ll bring

  • An observant, dependable approach and good attention to detail.
  • Clear communication and confidence dealing respectfully with different people.
  • Sound judgement and the ability to stay calm and follow procedures.
  • Confidence using computers and learning security and radio systems.
  • A full driver’s licence.

Security or related operational experience is valued, but we’re also interested in people with the right attitude and aptitude. A current NZ security licence or First Aid Certificate would be an advantage. We’ll provide training in our port-specific procedures and systems and support you to gain your First Aid Certificate if needed.

What we offer

You’ll receive practical training and build your knowledge of a working port. Whether you’re looking for a regular night roster or occasional shifts, your judgement and reliability will make a difference.

Some of our benefits include:

  • Life and trauma insurance.
  • Southern Cross health insurance.
  • 4% employer KiwiSaver contribution.
  • Fitness subsidy and wellbeing initiatives.

Benefits vary by employment type and are subject to eligibility and scheme terms.
