Department specific information:
Our Water Treatment team focuses on providing the citizens of Dunedin with a supply of safe and sustainable water.
The opportunity:
Are you looking for a foot on the career ladder or a move to one of NZ's largest water suppliers? These roles often suit people that are considering a career in the trades or who are already in the trades and are looking for a change in direction.
The residents of Dunedin along with visitors to the city are provided with safe drinking water supplied by six water treatment plants. These modern plants provide high quality drinking water which is required to meet the NZ Drinking Water Standards. The people who operate Dunedin's water treatment plants make an important contribution to the public health of the community in which they live and work.
Technicians/Trainees will need to adapt to challenges that come with the rapidly changing environment. The Dunedin City Council is about to embark on a programme of water treatment plant upgrades and improvements that will put us at the cutting edge of technology and innovation. We are looking for an enthusiastic, reliable, punctual, honest, and motivated individual with a great attitude to join our 3 Waters Team based at our water treatment plants.
As a Trainee you don't need specific experience in the industry, however it is important to have a genuine interest and commitment to learning about the process of treating water. To thrive in our operational and physically demanding environment, you will enjoy hands-on activity, problem solving and will be comfortable working with technology. You will follow a structured training and competency programme, undertake an apprenticeship, and gain an industry standard level four qualification in water treatment. If applying as a Water Treatment Technician, it is expected that you have gained the Drinking-Water L4 or L5 qualifications and have a minimum of 2 years' experience working in the industry. You will have the ability to work unsupervised, be prepared to work standby and overtime, and be ready to contribute to our team.
Ideally you will have:
- A L4 qualification in Water Treament or the ability to undertake the training to achieve this.
- Previous experience is not necessary however 'hands-on' experience gained from industry or a hobby/interest would be an advanatge.
- Desire to learn new skills and contribute to the city of Dunedin.
- Good written and oral communication skills with an eye for accruacy and detail.
What we offer
- Meaningful work supporting the management of Dunedin's water treatment plants.
