Join the Kawerau District Council team to keep our community moving and our facilities operating at their best.
We are looking for a practical, hands-on Roading & Facilities Technician to support the delivery of day-to-day maintenance across Council's roading network, drainage infrastructure, buildings, and public facilities.
Reporting to the Roading & Facilities Manager, you will play a key role in maintaining Council assets to a high standard, ensuring they remain safe, functional, and attractive for our community. This is a varied position that combines building maintenance, roading works, asset inspections, and customer service. You'll undertake maintenance and repair work directly and coordinate specialist contractors when tasks require expertise beyond minor repairs. Keeping accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and materials used is also a key part of this role.
No two days are the same, and you'll enjoy working both independently and as part of a team to solve problems and deliver practical outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
In this diverse role, you'll carry out inspections, repairs, and maintenance across Council assets, including:
Road and footpath repairs.
Drainage and street maintenance.
Building maintenance and minor repairs.
Carpentry, concreting, painting, welding, and minor plumbing work.
Road sign maintenance and renewal, and streetlight inspections.
Emergency response and traffic management support.
We're looking for someone who is practical, reliable, safety-focused, and takes pride in delivering quality work. You'll enjoy working outdoors, solving problems, and contributing to projects that benefit the whole community. You will bring:
Practical experience in roading, maintenance, construction, infrastructure, facilities, or a related field.
Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to maintenance work.
Experience using hand and power tools safely and effectively.
The ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
A commitment to health and safety best practice.
Good communication skills and a customer-focused attitude.
Experience with traffic management qualifications (TMO/STMS) would be advantageous, but not essential.
When applying for this role, any qualification in the trades or similar fields will be an advantage. Candidates must hold a full current Class 2 drivers licence, and ideally a Class 3, 4 or 5 Truck licence. A forklift and loader licence or the ability to obtain those licences will also be an advantage. Candidates must be eligible to work in NZ.
We are anticipating that the successful candidate will commence work in January 2027.
Please note: Kawerau District Council has an active Drug and Alcohol Policy. Candidates will be required to undertake a pre-employment medical, drug & alcohol testing, and Ministry of Justice vetting.
