Tier 1 projects, without the layers
Do you like the calibre of project at a tier 1 consultancy, but get frustrated by the layers? Several senior engineers between you and the work, a siloed traffic team, and being moved from task to task without ever seeing a project through?
Our client is a respected tier 1 engineering consultancy delivering major road and transport projects across Queensland. Their Brisbane traffic engineering function sits inside the wider Transport team. It isn’t tucked away on the side. You’ll work day to day alongside the road and civil design engineers, and your analysis will directly shape the design.
Why this role exists
The team leader wants a 2IC for traffic engineering in Brisbane: someone to take the lead on the day-to-day traffic work so they can step back from detailed delivery and focus on the bigger picture. They'll still be there to review and support you. But this isn’t a role where your work passes through several layers of review. You’ll own your projects and the traffic engineering in them, and you’ll have room to make the function your own.
What’s in it for you
If you’re good at what you do but feel boxed in where you are, let’s have a confidential conversation. You don’t need to be actively looking. Call Simone Roberts at RecruitR on 0413 586 562, or email [email protected]

What’s in it for you
- Real ownership. You lead the traffic engineering on your projects. Nobody sits between you and the design team.
- The whole project lifecycle. Planning, design, then construction, including analysis of temporary traffic management schemes. You see a project from start to finish.
- A small team where you’ll be noticed. Good work gets seen, and there’s a clear path to grow with the function as it expands locally.
- Developing others. There are civil graduates across the Transport team, doing drainage and alignment work, and you’ll have the chance to train them up to support the traffic work.
- Design exposure if you want it. If you’d like to broaden into design, you can.
- Tier 1 work and backing. You’ll be on major projects, with a wider national pool of expertise behind you when you need it.
- Lead traffic analysis and modelling to inform road design and road upgrade projects
- Work closely with design engineers to explain what the numbers mean for a design and how to optimise it
- Turn analysis around quickly to keep pace with a busy design office
- Support planning work through traffic engineering, modelling and analysis
- Provide traffic input during construction, including temporary traffic management analysis
- Mentor a graduate to support traffic-related tasks
- 5-10yrs post-graduate traffic engineering experience would suit well
- A consulting background, ideally with exposure to major or large-scale projects
- Strong analytical skills. You can sanity-check the inputs before they go into a model, and you know when a result doesn’t stack up. You’re not just turning the handle.
- Modelling experience, ideally microsimulation (Aimsun, VISSIM). Strategic modelling (EMME, CUBE, VISUM) is also valued.
- The ability to apply modelling to design and explain the “why” to design engineers and clients
- Curiosity, and a real drive to keep building your technical knowledge
