We are currently accepting applications from qualified environmental research scientists in the field of marine invasion ecology. Cawthron’s Invasion Ecology & Management team is part of the Biosecurity Group and works on a broad array of marine invasion projects. We undertake research to understand vectors, distributions, ecology and environmental impacts of marine pests and work with industry and government to develop tools and strategies for risk mitigation and management.
We also collaborate closely with associated teams in the Biosecurity Group working on aquatic health (e.g., marine diseases) and molecular surveillance. Our work has a strong applied and operational focus in maritime industries, aquaculture, and governance of marine resources and the blue economy. Cawthron’s three campuses provide excellent resources for scholarship, data analysis, field work, and experimental work, including state-of-the-art wet labs and biocontainment facilities.
What you'll do:
The role will engage with research and consulting in marine pests and biosecurity, including leadership and contributions to projects and programmes of various size and scope. The person will conduct high-quality science and ensure effective outputs and uptake are achieved while working in interdisciplinary teams. The role also involves developing ideas, leading or contributing to proposals, and securing funds that promote Cawthron’s objectives for scientific impact and uptake. Cawthron’s scientists work closely with communities and iwi and hapu (Māori groups). An interest in applying or developing cultural competency and relationship building is essential.

What you'll bring:
We are seeking applications from scientists with a PhD in marine invasion ecology, marine ecology, environmental science, biosecurity with a substantial environmental or ecological focus, or another closely related environmental discipline, together with at least ten years of relevant experience of marine invasion ecology, biosecurity, or marine ecology.
The successful applicant will have strong writing skills and a good publication record, strong inter-personal and communication skills, and a commitment to our culture of science excellence and developing solutions for clients. A background in marine invasion ecology or related marine ecology discipline (invertebrate and/or algal ecology, management in marine ecosystems) is required, and experience of invasion impacts, field research, or data science would be advantageous.
Candidates with a current scientific diving qualification are encouraged to apply (overseas qualifications may be converted to New Zealand’s scientific diver Certificate of Competence).
The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of securing funding and well-established professional networks. We are looking for a team player that engages effectively and enthusiastically with our team and Cawthron’s broader culture of collaboration.
If you think you have what it takes, but don't meet every single bullet point above, we encourage you to get in touch regardless to see if you could be a great fit for our team.
