Geotechnical, Earthquake and Dam Specialists

At EGL, we strive to see beyond. We are a New Zealand based, engineer-led consultancy with a strong focus on technical excellence and tackling highly complex problems.

Our projects are large; some spanning multiple decades and requiring deep technical judgement, continuity and close collaboration with clients and project partners.

Our team brings specialist dam engineering expertise, alongside broad experience across infrastructure, water, commercial and land development sectors. We take pride in being close to the design, owning the technical thinking, and helping shape solutions from early advice through to construction. We encourage our people to think deeply, build strong technical capability, and understand our clients’ drivers so we can deliver solutions that combine technical rigour with practical judgement that endure. At EGL, learning and growth never stops.

As we continue to grow, we’re looking for a Principal Engineering Geologist to join our team in Auckland, Christchurch or Waihi.

The opportunity
This role will suit a recognised specialist who wants to be the technical authority on complex ground problems, lead significant projects and client relationships, and shape the next generation of engineering geologists at EGL.

You’ll be the senior engineering geological voice on our most significant projects. You’ll set the technical standard for investigations, ground models and interpretation across the team, and provide the final review and sign-off on the work that leaves the office. You’ll lead key client relationships, direct project teams with accountability for commercial outcomes, and represent EGL with clients, design partners, regulators and peer reviewers.

You’ll help shape a strong pipeline of dam, tailings, water and infrastructure projects across New Zealand, with opportunities to support work in Australia and further afield.

At EGL, you’ll work closely with our leadership team and have real influence on how we grow our technical capability and our reputation in the market. This is not a desk role. You’ll be involved across the full project lifecycle, from framing the ground risk with clients early on, through investigation and design, to construction and the client conversations that go with it.

What you will do
  • Act as technical lead on EGL’s most complex projects; setting investigation strategy, defining the ground model and confirming it is fit for the decisions it supports and robust to peer review.
  • Lead and grow key client relationships, as the senior adviser clients turn to early for ground risk framing, constructability and value engineering advice.
  • Direct major and multidisciplinary projects; scope, fee proposals, resourcing, programme, budget and risk, with accountability for commercial outcomes across a portfolio of work.
  • Provide final technical review and sign-off of ground models, geological profiles, investigation and interpretive reports.
  • Lead specialist assessments in [CONFIRM SPECIALIST AREA: e.g. dam and tailings foundations, landslides, active faulting, seismic hazard, liquefaction].
  • Lead dam, tailings storage facility, levee and slope safety inspections, and lead or contribute to dam safety reviews and independent peer reviews.
  • Oversee engineering geology during construction of EGL-designed works, guiding teams through differing ground conditions and supporting the producer statement process.
  • Set and uphold technical standards across the team, including logging, ground modelling and review practice.
  • Mentor and develop senior, intermediate and graduate engineering geologists, supporting their pathway to and beyond chartership.
  • Lead proposals and bids, and help shape EGL’s growth, service offering and profile in the industry.
What you will bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering geology, geology, geological engineering or a closely related discipline. A postgraduate qualification is an advantage.
  • At least 15 years’ experience in engineering geology and ground investigation, including significant time on infrastructure, water, dam or mining projects.
  • Chartership: PEngGeol or CPEng.
  • Recognised specialist expertise in one or more of: dam and tailings foundations, landslides and slope stability, active faulting and seismic hazard, or liquefaction.
  • A track record of leading major projects and long-term client relationships, with accountability for commercial outcomes.
  • Experience providing senior technical review, peer review or expert advice that clients and regulators rely on.
  • Proven experience mentoring and developing engineering geologists, including supporting others to chartership.
  • In-depth knowledge of New Zealand practice, including NZGS guidelines, MBIE guidance, NZS 1170.5, the dam safety framework and the consenting environment.
  • Working knowledge of Core-GS or equivalent, Leapfrog, QGIS or ArcGIS, and geotechnical analysis software.
  • Clear, confident communication with clients, boards, regulators and design teams.
  • Flexibility to travel for site visits, fieldwork and construction.
