About the role
We are looking for an experienced Senior Accountant to manage a portfolio of clients and deliver accurate, timely accounting and tax services. Reporting to the Partner, you will work directly with business owners, coordinate annual compliance work, and contribute practical advice that helps clients make informed decisions. The scope of the position includes reviews junior staff work, mentors team members, and provides business advisory services.
Key responsibilities
Prepare and review annual financial statements, income tax returns, GST returns, reconciliations, and supporting workpapers.
Manage assigned client workflows, deadlines, queries, and documentation from initial information gathering through to completion.
Work directly with clients to obtain records, explain accounting and tax matters clearly, and resolve issues promptly.
Apply relevant New Zealand financial reporting, tax, Inland Revenue, and Companies Office requirements.
Review work prepared by other team members and provide constructive guidance.
Identify opportunities to improve internal processes, workflow consistency, and client service.
Support clients with budgeting, cash-flow planning, management reporting, or wider business advice.
About you
5+ years of relevant accounting experience, ideally in a New Zealand public-practice environment.
Experience preparing annual accounts and New Zealand tax compliance work for a range of clients.
Strong working knowledge of Xero and practice-management software.
Confidence managing competing deadlines while maintaining accurate, well-documented work.
Clear written and verbal communication, sound judgement, and a professional approach to client relationships.
CA qualification, equivalent qualification, or progress toward qualification.
Current eligibility to work in New Zealand.
Experience reviewing work and supporting the development of junior or intermediate accountants.
Exposure to business advisory, budgeting, cash-flow forecasting, or management reporting.
Advanced Excel capability.
