About us

Selwyn Water is a council-controlled organisation delivering drinking water and wastewater services across Waikirikiri Selwyn. We support a growing district with safe, reliable and affordable services, protecting the wellbeing of our communities now and for future generations.

The role

Reporting to the Manager Infrastructure Development Engineering, you will assess water and wastewater infrastructure for new development, helping ensure it meets Selwyn Water’s standards and can be operated and maintained effectively.

You will review connection and network capacity, engineering plans, technical reports and resource consent applications. Working with developers and consultants, you will provide clear advice, explain requirements and help applications progress efficiently while maintaining sound technical standards.

You will monitor construction, undertake site inspections and review quality assurance information. You will provide water and wastewater technical input to support Council’s section 224(c) certification process and check as-built information and asset records for handover.

You will have practical engineering experience in managing routine assessments independently, recognising issues that need specialist input and seek guidance appropriately. You will work with your manager and colleagues across planning, operations and asset management on more complex matters.

You will also help improve our engineering practices and Engineering Code of Practice, considering long-term maintenance, cost and outcomes for customers and communities.

What you will bring

  • A relevant qualification in engineering or surveying, or an equivalent combination of qualifications and relevant practical experience.
  • Experience in engineering design, technical report review, or infrastructure construction, with the judgement to assess routine applications and identify when further advice is needed.
  • An understanding of water and wastewater infrastructure, relevant design and construction standards, and the New Zealand resource consenting environment.
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail and clear technical documentation.
  • The ability to give practical advice, communicate decisions clearly and work constructively with developers, consultants, contractors and colleagues.
  • Confidence using digital systems and maintaining accurate assessment and asset records.
  • A commitment to safe working practices and a full driver’s licence.

Experience in land development design, resource consenting, construction quality assurance or water services would be advantageous, as would relevant professional registration or Engineering New Zealand membership.

The opportunity

You will work across the development pathway, from early advice and design review through to construction and handover. The role offers varied practical work, opportunities to learn from colleagues and scope to improve how we serve a growing community.
