Senior Electrical Engineer | Wollongong
Build Your Future with Alliance Automation
At Alliance Automation, we're helping shape the future of Australian industry through automation, digital innovation, electrical engineering and operational technology.
We're looking for an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer to join our team in Wollongong, bringing strong heavy industrial experience to technically challenging projects across the Illawarra and broader Australian industry.
This is a hands-on senior role for an engineer who understands complex industrial environments and enjoys solving real-world electrical engineering challenges. You'll combine strong technical capability with project delivery and client engagement, taking ownership of electrical design outcomes while working alongside a multidisciplinary team of engineers, designers, project managers and technical specialists.
If you enjoy being close to the engineering, working with industrial assets and solving complex problems from design through to commissioning, this is an opportunity to do that while building your career in Wollongong.
The Opportunity
You'll work across the full project lifecycle, from understanding client requirements and developing concepts through detailed design, construction support, testing, commissioning and handover.
Heavy industrial experience will be central to the role. We're looking for someone who understands the practical realities of designing and delivering electrical solutions within operating industrial environments, where safety, reliability, maintainability and constructability all matter.
You'll remain technically hands-on while taking ownership of engineering outcomes, working closely with clients and multidisciplinary project teams, mentoring developing engineers and contributing to the continued improvement of our electrical engineering capability.
Your role will include:
- Developing, reviewing and delivering electrical engineering designs for heavy industrial and infrastructure projects.
- Working directly with clients and stakeholders to understand operational requirements, define scopes and develop practical, fit-for-purpose engineering solutions.
- Preparing and reviewing electrical design documentation, including single-line diagrams, schematics, general arrangements, equipment schedules, technical specifications, calculations and design reports.
- Applying your knowledge of industrial electrical systems including power distribution, motor control, protection systems, switchboards and associated electrical infrastructure.
- Providing technical guidance throughout design, construction, testing, commissioning and handover.
- Ensuring engineering deliverables meet relevant Australian Standards, legislative requirements, client specifications and Alliance Automation quality requirements.
- Coordinating technical deliverables in line with project schedules, budgets and agreed outcomes.
- Providing trusted engineering advice to clients, project teams, contractors, suppliers and site personnel.
- Contributing to design reviews, technical risk assessments, estimating, procurement and commissioning activities.
- Collaborating across electrical engineering, control systems, instrumentation, operational technology and project delivery teams.
- Mentoring and supporting graduate, junior and intermediate engineers in their technical and professional development.
- Building strong client relationships through sound technical advice, clear communication and consistent delivery.
- Contributing to the continuous improvement of engineering standards, tools, systems and design processes.
- Promoting a strong culture of health, safety, environment and quality across all project activities.
What You'll Bring
We're looking for an experienced Electrical Engineer with a strong background in heavy industrial environments and the technical capability to understand not just how electrical systems are designed, but how they operate in the real world.
You'll be comfortable working across complex industrial facilities, engaging with clients and site teams and developing electrical solutions that consider operational requirements, safety, reliability and practical implementation.
We're looking for someone with:
- A recognised tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering.
- At least five years of relevant electrical engineering experience, with demonstrated experience in heavy industrial environments.
- Strong experience in sectors such as heavy manufacturing, mining and minerals processing, metals, water and wastewater, energy, utilities, process industries or similar industrial environments.
- Demonstrated experience in the design, construction, commissioning or maintenance of heavy industrial electrical installations.
- Strong knowledge of electrical engineering principles, design methodologies and relevant Australian Standards.
- Experience developing and reviewing electrical drawings, specifications, calculations and other engineering deliverables.
- Strong knowledge of industrial electrical systems including power distribution, motor control, protection systems, switchboards and associated electrical infrastructure.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and electrical design software such as PowerCAD or equivalent.
- An understanding of control systems, instrumentation, industrial communications and operational technology environments.
- Experience coordinating technical activities and engineering deliverables across multidisciplinary projects.
- The ability to build effective working relationships with clients, contractors, suppliers and internal teams.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capability, with the confidence to make sound technical decisions.
- A practical, accountable approach and a genuine commitment to safety, quality and delivering good outcomes for the client.
