Role Design Engineer - Power Electronics
Location IBC Knowledge Park, Bengaluru
Reporting to Team Lead - Power Electronics/Architect - Power Electronics
Team Name: Power Electronics
About the Team and the Role:
The Power Electronics team at Ather is responsible for the design and development of the core electrical and electronic hardware subsystems that literally adds the power to our products. They are responsible for the design and implementation of the motor drive, on-board and off-board chargers including our public charging infrastructures, power conversion units etc. It ensures Ather’s superior product positioning through cutting-edge technology , competitor benchmarking and platform reuse while adhering to strict QS standards and corporate values.
This role is for a Power Electronic Design Engineer who will work on analysis and design of power electronic circuits focusing on power devices (Silicon and/or WBG), magnetics and capacitors, and other digital and analog peripherals.
Responsibilities:
Lead the design and development of power electronic subsystems such as on/off-board chargers, DC-DC converters, motor drives and BMS, meeting performance, cost and reliability targets.
Own the subsystem from concept through validation, production and field support, working with the HW Architect on cost and design trade-offs.
Lead or carry out simulation, schematic design and PCB layout, with attention to component selection, derating and thermal design.
Drive reuse of platforms and proven designs to reduce time to market and cost, and improve quality.
Plan and oversee prototyping, testing and validation, including EMI/EMC and environmental testing.
Lead DFMEA reviews, apply DFM/DFA/DFR principles and build lessons learnt into new designs.
Drive root cause analysis and corrective actions (RCA/CAPA) for failures found in testing, manufacturing builds or the field.
Work with NPD and Operations on manufacturing test plans, yield improvement and support for designs already in production.
Work with firmware and system teams to define and implement control and firmware requirements.
Work with suppliers and component manufacturers to evaluate technologies and resolve technical issues.
Mentor junior engineers and guide them through challenging, high-pressure projects.
Identify workflow constraints, address challenges proactively and escalate issues when needed.
Maintain design documentation and follow company design and development processes.
Experience and Qualifications:
B.Tech/M.Tech with specialization in Electrical or Electronics Engineering.
5–10 years of experience in power electronics hardware design.
Has taken a product through at least one full design cycle (design, manufacturing, field performance and design improvements).
Must Have Competencies:
Strong expertise in power semiconductor devices, gate drivers and converter/inverter topologies (AC-DC, DC-DC, motor drives).
In-depth understanding of switching waveforms and semiconductor losses, with experience in loss modeling.
Good understanding of analog and digital circuit design.
Expertise in noise, EMI/EMC and signal integrity in high-power designs.
Proficient with simulation and design tools (PSIM, MATLAB/Simulink, LTspice, OrCAD/Allegro).
Hands-on expertise with lab equipment (DSO, DMM, power supplies, electronic loads, data loggers).
Sound knowledge of magnetics design, thermal management and component derating.
Good to Have Competencies:
Product development experience on battery chargers, motor controllers or BMS.
Working knowledge of embedded C/C++ and digital control of power converters.
Familiarity with automotive and electrical safety standards (AIS, ISO 26262, IEC).
Understanding of electronics manufacturing processes.
