Metro Performance Glass has been shaping the future of glass in New Zealand for nearly 40 years. We're proud of our reputation for innovation and quality, but what really sets us apart is our people and our dedication to delivering excellent service to our customers.

We're looking for an experienced Maintenance Engineering Manager who knows their way around a manufacturing plant, enjoys solving problems and isn't afraid to roll up their sleeves and get hands-on.

This isn't a role where you'll spend all day behind a desk. We need someone who can lead a team, plan for the future and be right there on the factory floor when things need fixing.

What's the job?

Based at our busy Highbrook manufacturing plant, you'll take ownership of the site's maintenance operations, leading a team of engineers to keep our machinery running safely, reliably and efficiently.

You'll be balancing the big-picture stuff — planning equipment upgrades, improving reliability and managing budgets — with the day-to-day realities of a busy production environment.  When something breaks down, you'll be working alongside your team to find solutions, minimise downtime and get production moving again.

You’ll also be part of our National Manufacturing Logistics Team – involved with strategic planning and setting the standards across both our Highbrook and Christchurch (Hornby) sites.

What you'll be doing:

  • Leading, supporting and developing the maintenance engineering team.
  • Getting hands-on with troubleshooting, breakdowns and practical engineering solutions.
  • Driving preventative maintenance programmes to keep equipment performing at its best.
  • Identifying recurring breakdowns and finding ways to fix the root cause, not just the problem.
  • Developing long-term maintenance strategies and capital equipment replacement plans.
  • Improving machine reliability, reducing waste and keeping maintenance costs under control.
  • Managing the repairs and maintenance budget.
  • Working closely with production and the wider National Manufacturing and Logistics team to drive improvements across the business.
  • Leading by example when it comes to health and safety, ensuring machinery and equipment are maintained and operated safely.

 What we're looking for

First and foremost, you MUST hold a tertiary qualification in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering. This is an essential requirement for the role.

You'll also bring:

  • Proven maintenance engineering experience in a busy manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Experience leading and developing a maintenance or engineering team.
  • Strong mechanical and/or electrical troubleshooting skills and a practical, hands-on approach.
  • Experience with preventative maintenance, breakdown analysis and continuous improvement.
  • The ability to think strategically while still being comfortable getting your hands dirty.
  • Sound planning, budgeting and problem-solving skills.
  • A strong commitment to health and safety.
  • A calm head under pressure and the ability to make things happen when production is on the line.

Most importantly, you're the kind of leader who leads from the front, backs their team and gets things done.

 Why join Metro?

You'll be joining one of New Zealand's leading glass manufacturers, working with a wide range of specialised manufacturing equipment in a busy, fast-paced environment.

This is an opportunity to make a real difference — improving plant performance, developing your team and helping shape the future of our manufacturing operations.

If you're a qualified engineer who enjoys leading people, fixing problems and making machinery run better, we'd like to hear from you.

The fine print...

  • Metro Glass has a strong commitment to workplace health and safety and the well-being of our people. It will therefore be no surprise to you that prospective candidates will be required to pass a drug test before a formal offer is made and all new employees will be subject to ongoing random tests as part of your employment.
  • Candidates must have a legal entitlement to work in New Zealand (be a citizen or resident) and live in New Zealand at the time of application.
  • For this role, we are not accepting applications from candidates who require sponsorship or a work visa or a variation to an AEWV.
