About us

Freightways Information Services (FIS) provides shared IT and advisory services to the Freightways Group, supporting some of New Zealand's most recognised courier, express freight and information management businesses.

Based at our Penrose head office, you'll join a friendly, supportive team that looks out for one another. We take pride in our work and make time to connect, celebrate achievements and put our value of "working as a family" into practice.

About the role

Looking to build on your accounting experience and take on more responsibility? This Assistant Accountant role offers variety, practical learning and the opportunity to see how finance supports a large group of businesses.

Working closely with the FIS finance team, you'll contribute to day-to-day accounting and month-end processes while developing your knowledge of software accounting, intercompany billing and financial analysis. We are looking for a motivated and adaptable Assistant Accountant to join our dynamic finance team. In this varied role, you will learn from everyone around you and will have the opportunity to take on a multitude of tasks to support the finance team and grow your career.

We support career development across Freightways. As you build your capability and understanding of the business, you'll have opportunities to broaden your experience and contribute to improvements in how we work.

What you'll be doing

  • Assist with month-end processing and general accounting activities to support accurate, timely reporting.

  • Process supplier invoices and payments, investigate discrepancies and respond to queries.

  • Prepare accurate invoices for services provided to Freightways businesses.

  • Develop your understanding of how we account for IT software and support the related accounting processes.

  • Prepare bank and supplier account reconciliations, investigate variances and assist with financial analysis.

  • Help collect and maintain business emissions data.

  • Contribute to finance projects, identify opportunities to improve processes and support the team as priorities evolve.

What you'll bring

You'll have a sound grounding in accounting principles, some practical accounting experience and a willingness to keep learning. Experience with software accounting would be useful, but we're equally interested in your curiosity and ability to develop new skills.

You'll also bring:

  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to getting things right.

  • Good organisational skills and the ability to manage competing deadlines.

  • Confidence using Excel and an ability to learn new systems.

  • An analytical approach and a willingness to investigate and resolve discrepancies.

  • Clear communication skills and the ability to build relationships across the business.

  • Initiative, flexibility and a collaborative approach to supporting your team.

This is an office-based role in Penrose, Auckland, suited to someone who enjoys working alongside colleagues and learning through day-to-day collaboration.
