ABOUT US

Gloster Engineering is a Hamilton-based precision engineering company with a strong reputation for quality, reliability, and technical excellence. We manufacture and supply precision-engineered components to a range of industries across New Zealand — dairy, food and beverage, animal health, marine, automotive, gas, and medical — operating from our modern Frankton facility with a skilled team of tradespeople who take real pride in their work.

We are well invested in plant and people, and we keep our machines busy. This is a genuine opportunity to join a stable, well-run business at the right time.

THE ROLES

We are growing our CNC team and have two permanent, full-time positions available. One is in turning and one is in milling. You only need to apply once. We will consider every applicant for both roles and talk with you at interview about where your skills fit best.

1. MAZAK CELL COORDINATOR — CNC TURNING

This role is a step up from a straight operator role. You will program, set and run work on our Mazak turning centres. These machines have live tooling, C-axis and sub-spindle capability, and part of the cell also has Y-axis milling. That means turning, milling, cross-drilling and off-centre features are all cut in the same setup, and parts come off the machine complete.

You will also coordinate the cell. That means sequencing jobs to the production plan and grouping work to cut down changeovers. It also means making sure no machine stands idle waiting on a program, tooling or material, and flagging at-risk jobs to the Factory Foreman early. You will guide the other machinists in the cell, but they will not report to you.

You need to be confident writing programs at the control from a drawing, not just editing someone else's. Mazatrol is a real advantage. If you are a strong programmer on Fanuc or another control, we know the right person can pick up Mazatrol quickly.

2. CNC MILL SETTER / OPERATOR — CNC MILLING

This is a setting role, not a button-pushing one. You will set up and run work on our CNC machining centres. The work is low-volume and high-variety: pockets, profiles, bores, threads and drilled patterns, including 4th-axis rotary set-ups.

You will plan your own set-ups and choose and fit the work holding and tooling. You will set your offsets, prove out the program and get the first-off right. You should also be confident editing programs at the control to hold tolerance and bring cycle times down.

Both roles report to the Factory Foreman. In both, you will take genuine ownership of the quality of everything that comes off your machines.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING — BOTH ROLES

  • A relevant trade qualification as a Fitter/Turner or Machinist (or equivalent), or demonstrated equivalent experience

Proven experience setting your own work on CNC turning centres and/or CNC machining centres, working from engineering drawings

  • Confidence editing programs and offsets at the control

  • Experience working to tight tolerances in a precision engineering environment

  • Sound use of precision measuring equipment, such as micrometers, verniers, and bore, height and thread gauges

  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach to problem-solving

  • A genuine commitment to quality and getting it right first time

For the Mazak Cell Coordinator role, we are also looking for:

  • Experience writing CNC turning programs at the control from a drawing

  • Live tooling, C-axis and sub-spindle experience, or the capability and appetite to be trained into it

  • The organisational ability and confidence to coordinate work across several machines and guide peers

For the CNC Mill Setter / Operator role, it would be an advantage to have:

  • 4th-axis rotary or multi-axis milling experience

  • Machine probing and tool presetting experience

An advantage in either role, but not essential:

  • Mazatrol, Fanuc or G-code controls

  • CAM experience, such as Edgecam or Siemens NX

  • Previous cell leader, lead hand, or coordinator experience in a machine shop

  • Experience in a job shop producing low-volume, high-variety work

  • Experience across both turning and milling

NON-NEGOTIABLE REQUIREMENTS

The following requirements are essential. We will not progress applications that do not meet them:

  • Legal right to work in New Zealand, with no exceptions

  • Trade qualification or demonstrated equivalent experience in CNC machining

  • Minimum 5 years' practical CNC turning and/or milling experience, including setting your own work

  • Willingness to undergo pre-employment drug and alcohol screening

  • Availability for a face-to-face interview and practical skills assessment in Hamilton

WHAT WE OFFER

  • $38 – $42 per hour, depending on skill and experience, reviewed annually

  • Varied, interesting work on well-invested Mazak turning centres and CNC machining centres

  • For the right person, a coordination role with genuine ownership of a cell, not just a machine

  • Day shift, Monday to Friday, with no weekend or night work

  • A stable, privately owned Hamilton engineering business with more than 25 years behind it

  • A team that values craft, quality, and getting on with the job

  • A genuine opportunity to grow your skills, including programming, as we invest and expand

HOW TO APPLY

Apply through Seek with your CV and a short covering letter. In your letter, tell us about your CNC turning and/or milling experience, the machines and controls you have worked on, and any experience coordinating or leading others. If you have a preference for one role, tell us. If you are open to either, tell us that too.

We will invite shortlisted candidates to a face-to-face interview and a practical skills assessment at our Frankton workshop.

No recruitment agencies please. We are managing this process ourselves.
