About the role

We are looking for a passionate and capable People and Culture Manager to lead our people and culture function and help shape the employee experience at Onsen.

Reporting to the General Manager and Directors, you will work closely with our leadership team to provide practical advice, strengthen our workplace culture and ensure our people practices support the continued success of the business.

This is a varied, hands-on role spanning the full employee lifecycle, from recruitment and onboarding through to employee development, engagement and retention. You will also oversee immigration compliance, learning and development, and workplace health and safety, while leading our Senior Administrative Officer (People & Culture/Reservations).

If you enjoy building strong relationships, solving problems, developing people and creating a positive workplace where teams can thrive, this is an opportunity to make a genuine impact.

What you will be responsible for

People and culture leadership

  • Lead the delivery and continuous improvement of people and culture practices, policies and procedures.

  • Partner with Heads of Department on workforce planning, recruitment and resourcing to meet operational needs.

  • Provide practical guidance on employment relations, performance management, workplace matters and employment compliance.

  • Support leaders to build capability, manage performance effectively and foster a positive, inclusive and high-performing culture.

Recruitment, development and employee experience

  • Oversee end-to-end recruitment, onboarding and employee inductions, creating a welcoming and consistent experience for new team members.

  • Identify learning and development needs and coordinate training, including mandatory and role-specific requirements.

  • Develop initiatives that strengthen employee engagement, wellbeing, recognition and retention.

  • Maintain effective performance review processes and support ongoing employee development.

Immigration and compliance

  • Manage employer accreditation renewals, job checks and relevant visa monitoring to support compliance with New Zealand immigration requirements.

  • Maintain accurate employee records, training documentation and people-related reporting.

  • Monitor relevant employment legislation and ensure our people practices remain compliant and up to date.

Health, safety and operational compliance

  • Lead and support the development and continuous improvement of workplace health and safety practices.

  • Coordinate risk management, incident reporting, investigations and emergency preparedness.

  • Oversee relevant training and compliance requirements, including first aid, fire wardens, LCQ, logbooks and P endorsements.

  • Work collaboratively with operational leaders to support applicable vehicle, food safety and alcohol-related compliance requirements.

About You

You will ideally bring:

  • At least two years’ experience in a human resources or people and culture role.

  • Sound knowledge of New Zealand employment legislation, immigration requirements and contemporary people management practices.

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the confidence to advise and support managers and employees.

  • Excellent organisation and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities in a dynamic operational environment.

  • A high level of integrity, discretion and professionalism when handling confidential and sensitive matters.

  • Strong digital literacy and confidence working with HR systems, business software and reporting.

  • An understanding of workplace health and safety systems, risk management and compliance processes.

  • A proactive mindset, sound judgement and a genuine interest in continuous improvement and employee wellbeing.

  • The ability to lead, coach and support others while working collaboratively across different departments.

A relevant tertiary qualification in Human Resources, Employment Relations or a related discipline would be an advantage.

Applicants must be legally entitled to work in New Zealand.
