Environmental Technician - Bluff
South Port's Infrastructure and Environmental Team is responsible for maintaining the land, sea and wharf infrastructure that supports our port operations, while ensuring our activities are undertaken safely, responsibly and in accordance with our environmental obligations.
As New Zealand's southernmost commercial port, we operate in a complex operating environment where shipping, marine operations, container handling, warehousing activities, infrastructure development, contractors and environmental management requirements intersect every day.
We're looking for an Environmental Technician to join our Infrastructure and Environmental Team. This is a hands-on role supporting environmental monitoring, resource consent management, compliance activities and environmental improvement initiatives across a busy working port.
This role offers a rare opportunity to work at the intersection of marine operations, infrastructure development, environmental monitoring and resource consent management. Working closely with our Environmental Engineer, you'll help ensure environmental considerations are practical, effective and integrated into the way we operate.
About the role
Working alongside our Environmental Engineer, you'll gain exposure to a diverse range of environmental activities across South Port's operations.
You will be directly involved in:
Environmental monitoring, inspections and field sampling
Collecting, analysing and maintaining environmental data and records
Supporting resource consent applications, ongoing consent management and compliance monitoring
Assisting with environmental incident response, investigations and corrective actions
Supporting spill response and other environmental emergency activities
Supporting environmental improvement initiatives, infrastructure projects and environmental work programmes
Working alongside operational teams, contractors, consultants and port users
Assisting with environmental reporting and stakeholder engagement
No two days are the same. One day you may be undertaking environmental monitoring around the harbour, the next assisting with a resource consent project, supporting an infrastructure development, investigating an environmental issue, coordinating contractors, or working alongside operational teams to improve environmental performance across the port.
About you
We're open to candidates from a range of backgrounds.
Ideally, you'll have a qualification in environmental science, environmental management, engineering or a related discipline, together with an interest in environmental monitoring, compliance and environmental management.
You'll also bring:
Strong observation, data collection and reporting skills
A practical approach to problem solving
The ability to communicate technical information in plain language
Confidence working both independently and as part of a team
Strong relationship-building skills and a collaborative approach
Initiative, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn
Experience with environmental monitoring programmes, environmental management systems, resource consent compliance, GIS or CAD would be advantageous, but not essential
We're also keen to hear from recent graduates or emerging environmental professionals looking to develop their skills within a unique operational environment.
Why South Port?
This is an opportunity to build practical environmental experience in a commercial port environment that few organisations can offer.
You'll gain exposure to:
Marine and port operations
Environmental monitoring, fieldwork and incident response
Resource consent management and compliance
Infrastructure and development projects
Working with a wide range of operational, regulatory and community stakeholders
At South Port, you'll be part of a small, supportive team where your contribution is visible and where you'll have genuine opportunities to learn, grow and make a difference.
