About the role

Deliver a kaupapa Māori, community-based mental health and addiction service for pēpi, tamariki and rangatahi (infants, children, adolescents and youth) and their whānau across the Tūwharetoa ki Kawerau rohe. Join an established kaupapa Maori organisation grounded in whakapapa, whenua and mana motuhake. The role provides specialist assessment, treatment, therapy and support that is strengths-based, resilience-oriented and grounded in Māori values, beliefs and practice, including for tamariki and rangatahi with co-existing mental health and alcohol and other drug (AOD) needs.

Key responsibilities

  • Complete comprehensive, culturally informed assessments of pēpi, tamariki and rangatahi referred from any source, covering mental health, AOD use, development, risk and cultural needs, with whānau taking part where practicable

  • Develop recovery plans with tamariki, rangatahi and their whānau that set goals towards discharge, identify early warning signs, wellness maintenance and relapse prevention, and address physical, spiritual, social and psychological needs

  • Deliver evidence-based treatment, appropriate psychotherapies and talking therapies, and individual, group and whānau interventions, including for co-existing mental health and AOD needs

  • Monitor symptoms and progress at agreed intervals; recognise urgency and escalate acute or crisis presentations through Hauora risk procedures and local crisis pathways

  • Apply Māori frameworks and models of care and complete a cultural assessment as part of every assessment

  • Act as key worker for an allocated caseload, placing whānau at the centre of planning, building on strengths and gains already achieved, and supporting whānau to develop their own solutions

  • Facilitate access to kaumātua and whakawhanaungatanga, and deliver support in marae, kāinga, kura and community settings matched to the developmental stage of pēpi, tamariki, taiohi and rangatahi

  • Navigate tamariki, rangatahi and whānau through health and social systems and plan transition to adult services at the appropriate time
