Training Advisor - Automotive Industry
Timaru-based | South Canterbury Region
You've worked in the automotive industry, understand the realities of the workshop floor, and enjoy building strong relationships with people.
Now it's time to use that experience to help shape the future workforce.
MITO is seeking a Training Advisor based in Timaru to support learners and employers across the South Canterbury region. This is an opportunity to step away from the tools while remaining closely connected to the industry you know and enjoy.
Working with apprentices, employers, and industry stakeholders, you'll play a key role in supporting training and qualification outcomes while helping businesses grow skilled, capable teams.
About the Role
This is a varied role that combines relationship management, learner support, workforce development, and industry engagement.
You will regularly visit workplaces throughout the region, building trusted relationships with employers and learners, monitoring training progress, and ensuring apprentices receive the support they need to succeed.
No two days are the same. One day you may be visiting a busy automotive workshop, the next you are meeting with employers, supporting learners through challenges, analysing progress, or identifying opportunities to grow training participation across the region.
Key Responsibilities
- Support apprentices to achieve training milestones and qualifications
- Build and maintain strong relationships with employers and industry stakeholders
- Conduct regular workplace visits throughout the region
- Promote MITO's training opportunities and services
- Monitor learner progress and provide guidance and support
- Maintain accurate records and reporting requirements
- Analyse regional training outcomes and identify opportunities for growth
- Act as a trusted advisor to employers and learners
What We Are Looking For
We are particularly interested in candidates who have hands-on experience in the automotive industry and deeply understand the environment MITO’s learners and employers work in every day.
You may be a qualified mechanic, technician, workshop foreperson, service advisor, or someone with extensive automotive industry experience who is looking for a new challenge.
To be successful, you will bring:
- Automotive industry experience and credibility
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills
- The ability to influence, engage and support people from diverse backgrounds
- Excellent organisational and time management skills
- Confidence using digital systems and maintaining accurate records
- Strong computer literacy and reporting capability
- A proactive, self-motivated approach
- A full New Zealand driver's licence
- Willingness to travel throughout the region
Along with a background in the automotive industry, experience in training, mentoring, account management, customer service, workforce development, or vocational education would be advantageous but is not essential.
Why Join MITO?

In return, you will enjoy:

- A supportive and collaborative team environment
- Autonomy and flexibility in how you manage your region
