About us

AusOptic is a growing technology company specialising in fibre optics, networking and telecommunications.

Our expertise spans across fibre in telecommunications, Ethernet and industrial communication links, as well as specialised scientific applications in photonics, fibre sensing, and production line environments.

Conveniently situated near the Macquarie Park Metro station, we're offering a friendly team environment where you can grow your skills and expertise.

The role

AusOptic is seeking a Photonics & Optical Engineer to strengthen our engineering and laboratory capability across photonics, optical sensing, calibration, and advanced scientific instrumentation specifically in our soon to be launched photonics calibration lab.

This hands-on engineering role involves the design, testing, calibration, integration, and evaluation of advanced optical systems. You will work with our team to build our R&D portfolio, laboratory operations, small-scale production of photonics solutions, and technical engagement with universities, research organisations, and industry partners. You'll be reporting to our General Manager.

About You

You are a technically driven engineer with a strong foundation in optical engineering, photonics, electronics, physics, or a related discipline, combined with practical laboratory experience. You have experience working with advanced optical systems, measurement equipment, calibration, integration, and troubleshooting, with the ability to translate complex photonics concepts into practical solutions. Strong analytical skills, technical communication, and a passion for emerging technologies will be key to your success.

Qualifications & Skills

Degree in Photonics, Optical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Physics, Mechatronics, or related discipline

  • Postgraduate or research experience in optical systems highly regarded

  • Practical calibration laboratory, instrumentation, or experimental engineering experience valued

  • Strong technical writing, reporting, and communication skills

  • Ability to collaborate with technical teams, customers, suppliers, and research partners

Technical Expertise

Experience in the following areas is highly valued:

  • Photonics and optical system design, integration, testing, calibration, and validation

  • Optical measurement equipment including power meters, OTDRs, optical spectrum analysers, tuneable lasers, and research-grade instrumentation

  • Fibre sensing technologies including acoustic, strain, and temperature sensing

  • Optical communications, photonics systems, and hybrid photonics/electronics solutions

  • R&D activities, prototyping, experimental testing, and small-scale production support

  • System integration, programming, fault diagnosis, and technical troubleshooting

  • Technical documentation, test procedures, and engineering reporting

Experience with photonic integrated circuits (PICs), waveguides, transceivers, silicon photonics, semiconductor processes, integrated photonics, or quantum technologies will be highly regarded.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform calibration, characterisation, and verification of optical and photonic instrumentation

  • Conduct optical measurements using OSAs, tuneable lasers, interferometers, and advanced metrology equipment

  • Support R&D through system design, assembly, testing, and verification procedures

  • Support transition of photonics solutions into small-scale production environments

  • Integrate optical, electronic, sensor, and control systems
