Mixed Animal Veterinarian – Rural New Zealand

Are you an experienced all-rounder looking for a change of pace and the opportunity to become part of a close-knit rural community?

We are looking for an experienced Mixed Animal Veterinarian to join a small, friendly veterinary clinic on the East Coast of the North Island.

This is a great opportunity for a vet who enjoys variety, is comfortable working across both large and small animals, and is looking to settle into a smaller provincial community.

The Role

You’ll work across a broad mix of cases, including:

  • 🐄 Cattle

  • 🐑 Sheep

  • 🐎 Equine

  • 🥛 Dairy

  • 🐶 Small animals

The role will suit a confident, capable vet who enjoys being an all-rounder. You may work sole charge at times, however you will have the support of experienced veterinarians from the parent clinic in Hastings, so you won’t be expected to know everything from day one.

What We're Looking For

Our key requirements are:

  • Experienced veterinarian — not a new graduate

  • Strong general/mixed animal skills

  • Comfortable working across large and small animal cases

  • Confident working independently when required

  • Someone who enjoys variety and a hands-on rural practice environment

  • Happy to live and work in a smaller provincial town

  • Someone looking to become part of and ideally settle into a rural community

  • A veterinary degree that is registerable in New Zealand

What's On Offer

  • $105,000+ base salary for a 40-hour week, with higher salaries available depending on experience

  • $125 per night on-call allowance, plus a share of call-out fees

  • Work vehicle and phone

  • Health insurance

  • Generous employee discounts

  • $2,000 relocation assistance

  • Weekend work is returned as a day in lieu

  • A supportive team environment with experienced vets available from the Hastings clinic

  • A varied mixed animal caseload across cattle, sheep, equine, dairy and small animals

  • The opportunity to enjoy a genuine rural lifestyle in a small, friendly community

  • Visa assistance available for eligible candidates

This is a great opportunity for an experienced mixed animal vet looking for variety, autonomy, lifestyle and the chance to become part of a close-knit rural community.

Why Make the Move?

If you’re looking for a role where you can enjoy variety, autonomy and a genuine rural lifestyle, this could be a great fit.

You’ll be joining a small, friendly team while still having access to experienced veterinary support from the Hastings clinic. The position offers the opportunity to work across a diverse caseload without the pace and intensity of a large metropolitan practice.
