Logistics Coordinator – Island Direct
Full-time, Permanent | Auckland
ABOUT US
Island Direct is Waiheke Island's dedicated passenger ferry operator, running daily services between Auckland's Downtown Ferry Terminal and Matiatia. We're a small, passionate team that punches above our weight and we're in a period of real growth, building out the people, systems, and culture to take the business to the next level.
We're not a big corporate. We're fast-moving, hands-on, and we back our people to make decisions and take ownership. If that sounds like your kind of environment, we'd love to hear from you.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Based at our offices at Z Pier in Westhaven, you'll play a critical role in managing crew rostering and vessel scheduling across our active fleet, ensuring the right people are in the right place for every sailing, every day.
Rostering is a major focus of this position, and previous experience managing complex rosters is essential. You'll be responsible for developing, maintaining and adjusting crew rosters, balancing operational requirements, staff availability, leave and shift coverage to ensure our ferry services run smoothly. During the busy summer months, this responsibility extends to rostering and coordinating shift coverage for our shore-based customer service team.
You'll also oversee crew timesheets, including reviewing and approving hours worked, coordinating payroll information and ensuring accurate and timely submission of payroll records.
When things don't go to plan, you'll be the one keeping everything moving, whether that's arranging last-minute crew coverage, managing unexpected absences, coordinating with Vessel Masters in real time or identifying potential rostering conflicts before they become operational issues.
From time to time, you'll also support operational projects and broader business initiatives, giving you exposure to different areas of the business.
You'll report directly to the Head of Maritime Operations and work closely with the wider team.
We're looking for someone who is highly organised, confident managing complex rosters and experienced in workforce scheduling. Strong rostering experience is a must for this role, along with the ability to think ahead, adapt quickly and keep operations running efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
ABOUT YOU
You bring solid coordination or scheduling experience; ideally from transport, logistics, or a similarly time-critical environment. You're someone who takes pride in a well-run operation and isn't fazed when the plan changes at short notice.
What we're really looking for:
- A natural organiser who can manage multiple moving parts without losing the thread.
- Strong written and verbal communication, you'll deal with crew, management, and occasionally with external stakeholders.
- Takes initiative, can lead and make some decisions independently without needing sign-off at every turn.
- A practical, solutions-focused mindset.
- Familiarity with maritime and/or public transport operations is helpful, but not essential.
ABOUT THE HOURS
This is a full-time permanent role based on a Monday to Friday, 37.5 hour week. As part of the team, you'll also participate in a rotational on-call roster covering weeknights, weekends, and public holidays, ensuring our staff always have reliable support behind the scenes when it counts.

Enjoy the convenience of parking at Westhaven Marina while on shift.
Flexible work location options, where possible.
Free hot beverages onboard and discounts on café items.
