Our Mission 🚲

Our mission at Workride is to get more Kiwis on a bike. We help more than 2,000 New Zealand employers offer bikes and e-bikes as a free, streamlined employee benefit, making the daily commute healthier, more affordable, and more sustainable. Employees from participating employers save between 32% and 63% on their dream ride through our free pre-tax benefit programme.

We're growing fast, and behind that growth sits a real finance operation, with instalment based benefits, banking and insurance partnerships, and a growing book of live agreements. We're looking for a Management Accountant to join our Christchurch team and take charge of the numbers that keep the Workride rocketship fuelled.

The Role:

You'll be Workride's in-house Management Accountant. You'll close the books each week and each month, turn them into reporting our founders and shareholders can act on, look after cash, and complete the operational tasks behind our bank funding and insurance cover.

You'll report directly to one of our Co-founders and run our accounts day to day. You're the link between our external bookkeeping team, who handle the processing, and the numbers our founders, shareholders, and advisors rely on.

We'll bring you up to speed properly. For the first few months you'll work hands-on alongside our Co-founder, running the weekly and monthly cycles yourself so you learn the product, the platform, and where every number comes from. Once you're across it, the management accounting is yours, and our bookkeepers will look to you as their point of contact. We're a small team, so expect to lend a hand in other parts of the business when we're feeling the pinch.

What You'll Be Doing

Close & Control

  • Weekly & Monthly Close: Own the close calendar. Review the bookkeeping, post the accruals, prepayments, and adjusting journals in Xero, and close each period on time.

  • Balance Sheet: Reconcile the balance sheet every month, including bank and float accounts, receivables, the lending facility, GST, and our fleet of leased bikes.

  • Fleet & Exceptions: Keep the fleet register and depreciation in step with the ledger, and account for early terminations, returns, and disposals.

Reporting & Insight

  • Management Accounts: Produce the monthly P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow, with commentary on what moved and why.

  • Budget & Variance: Track actuals against budget with each team lead, explain the variances, and feed the reforecast our Co-founder runs.

  • Shareholder & KPI Reporting: Prepare the monthly numbers for our shareholder reporting and the KPIs for our monthly review.

Cash, Funding & Insurance

  • Cash Flow: Run the cash position and the short term cash flow forecast, and flag what needs a decision.

  • Lender: Produce the information our bank requires to release funding each month, including drawdown requests, covenant and portfolio reporting, and the reconciliations behind them.

  • Insurers: Complete the operational tasks for our insurance cover, including monthly declarations, premiums, and claims through to settlement.

  • Receivables: Keep debtors under control. Follow up overdue instalments to our standard rules, and keep invoicing clean with our customers' finance teams, including PO numbers, contacts, and remittances.

Year End & Improvement

  • Year End: Prepare the year end pack and schedules for our tax and accounting advisors, and keep the books audit ready.

  • Better Systems: Be an important part of the development process as our engineering team automates billing and reporting. They'll consult you on what finance needs, and you'll help check that the numbers coming out are right.

What You Bring to the Team

You do not need to know our industry, or how our accounting works, before you start. Bring strong fundamentals and curiosity, and we'll teach you the rest.

The Essentials:

  • CA or CPA qualified, with three or more years of accounting experience.

  • You have run, or been a core part of, a month end close, including reconciliations, accruals, fixed assets, and GST.

  • You can explain a set of accounts in plain language to people who are not accountants.

  • Experienced in Xero, and strong in Excel or Google Sheets.

  • Organised and deadline driven, with weekly and monthly cycles that have to land on time.

  • Comfortable dealing directly with a bank, insurers, and customers' finance teams.

  • A startup mindset. You're happy to get into the detail first, then build the better way.

  • Based in Christchurch with full right to work in NZ. This is an onsite role at our CBD office.

Bonus Points for:

  • Experience in leasing, lending, asset finance, insurance, or subscription billing.

  • An audit or business advisory background at an accounting firm.

  • Time as the main finance person in a small or growing business.

  • Comfort using AI tools (like Claude) to raise the quality and speed of your work.

  • A real interest in cycling, the outdoors, health, or workplace wellness. Having fun is key!

What Success Looks Like in Your First 12 Months

In your first few months

You have run each weekly and monthly cycle yourself, with our Co-founder alongside, and you know where every number comes from. The close runs to a written calendar, and you are comfortable with our products, our platform, and the reporting our bank and insurers rely on.

By twelve months

The management accounting is yours. Month end closes on time with a reconciled balance sheet, and the founders read the management accounts and budget commentary rather than produce them. Bank and insurer reporting goes out on schedule, our bookkeeping team treats you as their point of contact, and automated reports you helped shape are replacing the manual ones.

Why You'll Love It Here

  • Real Ownership: The management accounting is yours, with funding, insurance, and treasury exposure that accountants at this stage rarely get.

  • Room to Grow: A proper ramp into the role, then scope to take on more senior finance responsibilities as Workride scales.

  • Close to the Decisions: Work directly with a Co-founder. Your numbers shape what we do next.

  • Good People Around You: An experienced bookkeeping team, and specialist advisors on the technical questions.

  • Modern Tool Stack: Xero, HubSpot, our own platform, and AI tools including Claude.

  • Awesome Culture: A supportive, high-performing team culture with great work life balance.

  • The Ultimate Perk?!: Full access to Workride's employee bike benefit scheme so you can get your dream bike or e-bike! 🚲

The Recruitment Process

Our process is simple and transparent:

  1. An initial casual chat with one of our founders, just to get the vibe.

  2. A working session at our office with both founders. We'll spend about an hour on a couple of real examples, worked through together.

  3. Offer of role, or feedback, provided directly by one of the Co-founders.
