Our Engineering Team.
We are passionate about solving complex technical problems and you'll always be empowered to bring your expert knowledge to the table!
At First AML, Engineering work in teams - Tūi, Kārearea, Weka, Pouakai and Dotterel. Each team includes 5 devs (including 1 Tech Lead). This role joins one of our newest teams, building the AI-powered features that are becoming core to the product. The teams work on continuous delivery where we ship numerous times throughout the day. We believe that this is the very best way to provide value to our customers. Collaboration is super important to us, each of our engineering teams partners with a dedicated expert Product Manager. This way of working creates a great team environment where it nurtures our passion of delivering an exceptional product at pace.
We work hard to ensure that you understand the positive role that you play in our team and we're committed to future development.
A bit about our Senior Product Engineer Role.
As a Senior Product Engineer at First AML, you'll be hands-on building our product and the AI features our customers rely on.
Day to day you'll design, build, test and ship scalable, high-performance back-end systems in a real production codebase. You'll write the code, review PRs and own features end to end, from an idea on the roadmap to something customers use. A big part of that work now involves AI: building features powered by LLMs, wiring them into our product workflows, and making sure they actually work in the hands of customers, not just in a demo.
You'll help shape how we build with AI as we go, the patterns, the tooling, the way we measure quality - but this is a build-and-ship role first. You'll spend your time in the codebase, not in a strategy deck.
Initially, you'll be joining us to provide cover for a member of our team while they're on parental leave. When they return, we'll continue your role within the wider Engineering team.
About you.
You're a software engineer first. You love writing code, and you've spent years shipping features that real customers use in a real product codebase.
You're tenacious and thrive when executing and moving fast. You'd rather ship, learn and iterate than debate in the abstract.
You care about building for the customer. You take the time to understand the real challenges customers face day to day. You have ideas, you push them, and you get a kick out of shipping something people actually use.
You're genuinely curious about AI as a tool for building. You tinker, you've built things with LLMs, and you have opinions about what works and what doesn't that you can back up.
You've changed how you develop as the tooling has evolved - and you're still changing.
You think about how to measure whether AI is actually working, not just whether it shipped
You care deeply about your team, you enjoy working as a tight knit unit that rallies around each other to meet deadlines
You speak up but always provide space for those around you to speak too
You believe great products come from great teams, not great individuals.
You see an opportunity for growth in the things you don't know, and don't shy away when you're out of your depth.
This is a software engineering role, not a research or data-science role. We're not looking for model-training, publications or academic ML experience — we're looking for a brilliant developer who's excited to build AI products for customers.
Our tech stack.
The front end is a React app built with TypeScript. We use Apollo to consume our internal API.
The back end is a GraphQL API built with .NET core, with a Postgres database. Ideally, you will have good experience in 1 or more of these technologies.
The whole thing is hosted in containers on AWS and AWS Lambda, managed with terraform, deployed with BuildKite and monitored in DataDog.
On the AI side we use AWS Bedrock today and are actively building out how we work with it, evaluation, patterns and tooling choices are still being shaped, and you'll have a real hand in that.
