We are an advocate for sexual and reproductive health rights, challenging barriers, championing equity and working with communities and health sector partners to create meaningful change. We are looking for an experienced and forward-thinking Communications Lead to strengthen our voice, grow our influence and help drive meaningful change in sexual and reproductive health and rights across Aotearoa.
This is an opportunity to lead a talented team, shape our communications direction and work on issues that genuinely matter. It is also a hands-on role where you'll be close to the action, creating content, engaging with media and bringing bold ideas to life.
This role is full time based at our National Office on Victoria Street, Wellington. Our office is a fun, inclusive and offers a thoughtfully designed space, with a mix of shared, quiet, and collaborative areas. We also support flexible work practices, including working from home options.
Key areas of focus
As our Communications Lead, you'll be the driving force behind our communications, media relations, advocacy and public engagement. Reporting to the Director Community Programmes and Digital Platforms, you'll lead a team of communications specialists and work closely with senior leaders, clinical experts and teams across the organisation.
- Lead a bold, proactive communications approach that builds our profile and advances our advocacy priorities.
- Build strong media relationships, identify opportunities, manage emerging issues and support our leaders to communicate with confidence.
- Turn complex health and social issues into clear, engaging content and campaigns that inform, connect and inspire action.
- Coach and develop a capable communications team, encouraging creativity, collaboration and high performance.
- Champion contemporary digital communications, using audience insights, data, emerging technology and responsible AI to improve how we engage.
- Provide strategic communications advice to our Chief Executive and senior leaders, particularly on sensitive, complex or high-profile matters.
- Look beyond reach and impressions to understand how our communications are influencing conversations and creating impact.
What you will bring
We are looking for someone who is equally comfortable developing a communications strategy, advising senior leaders, responding to a media enquiry or rolling up their sleeves to deliver a great piece of content.
We are looking for someone with:
- Significant experience in communications, public relations or media, including leadership experience.
- Strong media relations skills, excellent judgement and confidence managing sensitive or challenging issues.
- Exceptional writing and storytelling skills, with the ability to connect with different audiences.
- Experience delivering advocacy, public-awareness or issues-based communications.
- A contemporary approach to digital communications, audience insights and emerging technologies.
- The ability to lead, inspire and develop people while building strong relationships across an organisation.
- A curious, creative and solutions-focused mindset, with the confidence to challenge thinking and explore new approaches.
Experience in health, public health, education, advocacy or the not-for-profit sector would be an advantage, but it's not essential. What matters most is your communications expertise, sound judgement, leadership capability and commitment to our purpose.
