We’re looking for an experienced VB6 Developer to support a major technology modernisation program within the ACT Government.
The role will focus on maintaining, enhancing and modernising legacy enterprise applications that support critical HR and payroll functions. You’ll work across existing VB6 applications, .NET technologies and SQL Server databases, helping to improve system performance, resolve defects and support the transition away from older technologies.
This is a hands-on development role suited to someone with strong VB6 experience who is comfortable working with legacy applications while contributing to ongoing modernisation initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Develop, maintain and enhance enterprise applications using VB6 and Microsoft .NET technologies. - Support and improve existing Windows Forms (WinForms) applications, including user interface functionality.
- Develop and optimise SQL Server databases, stored procedures, views, functions and queries.
- Build and maintain SSIS packages to support data integration, transformation and migration activities.
- Troubleshoot application issues, resolve defects and improve system performance.
- Support the modernisation of legacy applications, including migrating data and functionality to contemporary platforms.
- Conduct unit and integration testing, participate in code reviews and follow established development standards.
- Work closely with business analysts, solution architects, testers and other technical stakeholders to deliver effective solutions.
- Maintain technical documentation, including solution designs, technical specifications and deployment guides.
- Contribute to CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes using tools such as Azure DevOps and Git.
- Ensure applications meet relevant security, privacy and whole-of-government ICT standards.
- Provide ongoing technical support to ensure business-critical applications remain reliable and maintainable.
- Strong hands-on experience developing, maintaining and supporting applications using Microsoft Visual Basic 6 (VB6).
- Experience with Microsoft .NET technologies and Windows Forms application development.
- Strong SQL Server skills, including T-SQL, stored procedures, functions, views and database development.
- Experience troubleshooting, enhancing and supporting legacy enterprise applications.
- Understanding of the software development lifecycle, including development, testing, deployment and ongoing support.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively with technical and business stakeholders.
- Experience with SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), including ETL package development.
- Exposure to data migration, data transformation and data warehousing.
- Experience with C# and modernisation of legacy VB6 applications.
- Knowledge of query optimisation and database performance tuning.
- Experience with Azure DevOps, Git and CI/CD pipelines.
- Familiarity with microservices architecture and contemporary application development practices.
- Experience working in Agile delivery environments.
