tHelp shape smarter, more resilient water networks across New Zealand
Mō tō mātou āhuatanga | Who we are
At Tonkin + Taylor, we help clients plan, assess and improve the infrastructure that supports communities across New Zealand.
Our Water team works across water supply, wastewater and stormwater as well as wider environmental projects. We help clients respond to growth, renew ageing assets and address resilience challenges through planning, modelling, assessment and design.
This Principal role will help to lead our water supply and wastewater engineering and network planning teams - helping clients understand how their networks are performing today, what they'll need in the future, and designing the infrastructure that meets community needs efficiently.
Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity
We're looking for Principal Water + Wastewater Engineers or Hydraulic Modellers to join our team.
A big part of this role is helping clients understand how their networks are performing and what they'll need in the future. For hydraulic modellers, you'll work across network planning, hydraulic modelling and infrastructure assessments, helping identify constraints, test options and support investment decisions.
For engineers, you’ll lead design teams to deliver designs for renewals or new infrastructure including pressure and gravity reticulation and pump stations.
The role offers plenty of variety and the opportunity to build experience across planning, modelling and design over time.
You'll work alongside experienced engineers and specialists from across T+T and there will be opportunities to take on more responsibility for project delivery and client relationships.
Nobody arrives with experience across every aspect of the role. If you've built strong technical skills in one area and are keen to broaden your capability, we'd like to hear from you.
This is a full-time role and can be based at any of our offices across Aotearoa (Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Wellington, Nelson and Christchurch).
What you’ll do
- Lead proposals, project planning and business development activities.
- Lead water supply and wastewater projects from planning and assessment through design, works procurement and delivery.
- Develop, update and review hydraulic network models.
- Assess network performance, capacity and resilience.
- Support growth planning and infrastructure investment decisions.
- Develop network strategies and masterplans
- Investigate constraints and evaluate improvement options.
- Lead development of designs for concept, preliminary and detailed stages for treatment and reticulation of water supply and wastewater.
- Prepare and review reports, calculations and other technical deliverables.
- Work closely with clients, project teams and other technical specialists.
- Technical and professional development of junior staff including coaching and mentoring
- Share knowledge and help grow T+T's water planning, modelling and design capability.
Nā tōu rourou | What you'll bring
We're interested in hearing from practical, curious engineers and modellers who enjoy solving complex infrastructure challenges.
Ideally you'll bring:
- A degree in Civil, Environmental, Water Engineering or a related discipline.
- At least 15 years' experience in water or wastewater design, hydraulic modelling or a related field for a Principal Engineer or 5+ years of modelling experience for a hydraulic modeller.
- Previous experience working in an engineering consultancy or local government is an advantage.
- Experience in one or more of network modelling, hydraulic analysis, infrastructure planning, strategies or design.
- The ability to interpret and quality-check engineering, GIS and asset data.
- Experience using hydraulic modelling software, GIS, CAD or similar engineering tools.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
- The ability to communicate technical information clearly.
- A collaborative approach and sound professional judgement.
- Leadership skills.
- A passion for growing the capability of others.
Experience across both water supply and wastewater is welcome but not essential. Chartership with Engineering New Zealand (or equivalent) is desirable and T+T will support your ongoing professional development.
Ngā Hua | Our benefits
At T+T you'll have the opportunity to work on meaningful projects while continuing to grow your career.
Benefits include:
- Flexible working arrangements.
- The option to purchase additional leave.
- Professional development, mentoring and chartership support.
- Competitive remuneration including paid overtime as outlined in your employment agreement.
- A $750 annual wellbeing allowance.
- Sonder wellbeing support and annual flu vaccinations.
- Enhanced parental leave benefits and return-to-work coaching.
- Opportunities to work on projects across New Zealand and the Pacific.
