About Katherine West Health Board

Katherine West Health Board (KWHB) is an Aboriginal community-controlled organisation delivering primary health care and holistic health programs across a 162,000 km² region of remote Katherine West, Northern Territory. We take a whole-of-person approach to health and wellbeing — spiritual, cultural, emotional and family wellbeing included — and we're deeply committed to evidence-based, culturally appropriate care.

We're proud to prioritise the recruitment and retention of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff, and we're building genuine career pathways for community members into clinical, leadership and support roles. Working with KWHB isn't just a job — it's a life-changing experience that will challenge your perceptions and broaden your understanding of remote Australia.

Connecting People to Possibility

Katherine West Health Board is looking for a full-time NDIS Remote Community Connector Coordinator based in Katherine, NT, with regular travel to KWHB's four main communities. This is a fixed-term position aligned to KWHB's current funding agreement, running to October 2028. Reporting directly to the Access and Inclusion Manager, you will join an existing Remote Community Connector Coordinator, working as equal, collaborative partners who each take responsibility for two of KWHB's four main communities, with the goal of visiting each at least once a month. Time is split roughly evenly between community visits and your base in Katherine.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Building the capacity of the local Aboriginal workforce to take on Remote Community Connector responsibilities, including mentoring and training

  • Coordinating and supporting Remote Community Connectors to assist community members in accessing and navigating the NDIS

  • Undertaking regular visits across your allocated communities to identify appropriate care recipients and improve access to care

  • Providing culturally secure education and information to individuals, families, communities and service providers about the NDIS

  • Supporting participants to test eligibility, complete the NDIS access request process and understand their rights, goals and choices

  • Liaising and consulting with the NDIA, Support Coordinators and service providers to strengthen service pathways and ensure participants receive their entitlements

  • Sharing reporting and community responsibilities equally with your fellow Coordinator as you build confidence in the role

  • Identifying gaps in services and advocating for improvements in NDIS plans and remote disability supports

Is This You?

KWHB is genuinely open on background for this role. Candidates with a relevant qualification (for example in social work, disability or community services) are welcomed, as are new graduates — full training and support is provided alongside an experienced Coordinator. Candidates without a formal qualification will also be considered where they bring strong, demonstrated experience working with families and communities, particularly in a remote or Aboriginal community context. What matters most is attitude: a genuine, client-centred ethos and the confidence to build your own relationships in community.

Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

  • A relevant qualification such as a Certificate IV or tertiary study in social work, disability or community services

  • Experience working in or with remote Aboriginal communities

  • Demonstrated understanding of, or experience with, the NDIS

You will bring well-developed oral and written communication skills, the ability to build therapeutic and culturally safe relationships with clients, carers and community members, and the capacity to set priorities and work independently under minimal supervision. The ideal candidate is someone who is curious about remote healthcare and community life, brings a genuinely positive and supportive attitude, and is ready to grow into an equal, contributing partner within the team.

What You'll Receive

Compensation based on skills and experience is a competitive annual salary of up to $100,000, plus 12% superannuation, and a host of excellent benefits including:

  • Salary packaging opportunities

  • Six weeks annual leave plus 18% leave loading

  • A supportive, multidisciplinary team environment that values collaboration, learning and growth

  • Ongoing professional development, training and capacity-building opportunities

  • The chance to build lasting relationships and cultural connection that will shape your career and perspective

If you are ready to bring your skills and heart to a role where the impact is real and immediate, we would love to hear from you.
