  • Work closely with tour guides and other staff to keep tours running smoothly.

  • Represent Tio Ōhiwa professionally and follow environmentally responsible practices.

  • Report incidents, safety concerns and maintenance needs promptly to the Operations Manager.

About you

  • Hold a valid Maritime New Zealand skipper certificate and any endorsements required for our vessels and operations.

  • Have proven skippering experience, strong navigation skills and a sound understanding of maritime safety.

  • Be a clear communicator with a friendly approach and strong customer service skills.

  • Enjoy sharing knowledge about local history, culture and oyster farming.

  • Work well as part of a team.

  • Be able to carry out vessel duties and assist passengers safely.

  • Be available for weekends, public holidays and varying hours to suit tour schedules.

About us

Tio Ōhiwa is a whānau-owned Māori business based on the shores of Ōhiwa Harbour. Our experiences connect people with the harbour, its stories and the kai it provides. We take pride in our manaakitanga (making guests feel welcome) and caring for the environment that sustains our business and community.

Remuneration

  • A weekly retainer will be in place, covering availability for scheduled tours and routine vessel maintenance.

  • An additional $150 per day worked on the water, covering all tours operated that day and the associated preparation and clean-up.

  • Expected availability is four days per week during the off-season and five days per week during summer.
