The role

The Role

The acquisition of conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines is an historic and transformative endeavour for Australia. The whole-of-nation effort to safely and securely deliver the cutting edge nuclear-powered submarine program will transform Australia’s economic and national security landscape for decades to come.

We are seeking a proactive Supply Chain Engineer (Mechanical or Electrical) to join the Supply Chain Engineering (SCE) Directorate within the Program Engineering (PE) Branch.

This is primarily a governance, technical assurance and technical control role. The role is focused on establishing and maintaining the engineering frameworks, processes and arrangements required to support the safe, compliant and controlled delivery of systems, products and services through the supply chain.

The successful candidate will contribute to the development of technical governance frameworks, supplier assurance arrangements and evidence-based engineering processes. These activities support technical decision making, regulatory compliance and ongoing assurance activities across the submarine enterprise.

  • Reporting to the Senior Engineer (Supply Chain), the incumbent will be responsible to:
  • Contributing to the development, implementation and maintenance of SCE governance, technical control and assurance documentation.
  • Supporting the establishment and application of technical assurance, certification and compliance processes across the supply chain.
  • Conducting technical assessments, engineering reviews and assurance activities to support informed technical decision making.
  • Reviewing and assess technical documentation, Objective Quality Evidence (OQE), supplier deliverables and compliance artefacts to ensure alignment with defined technical requirements.
  • Supporting supplier qualification, assurance and capability assessment activities, including audits, reviews and evidence-based evaluations.
  • Assisting in the development and maintenance of the supply chain via engineering governance, requirements traceability and technical control arrangements.
  • Identifying technical risks, assurance gaps and compliance issues, and support the implementation of appropriate mitigation strategies.
  • Contributing to the development of assurance evidence packages and technical records that support engineering governance and oversight activities.
  • Liaising and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, suppliers and contractors to support technical assurance and governance activities.
  • Communicating, through various methods, complex technical concepts and assurance outcomes to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Providing specialist engineering advice to support governance, risk management, assurance and technical authority functions.
  • Undertaking other duties as directed by the Senior Engineer.

About our Team

The SCE Directorate plays a critical role in establishing and exercising technical control across the submarine enterprise, helping provide confidence in the safety, quality, reliability and operational effectiveness of products and services delivered through a complex supply chain. Our team develops and maintains the governance, assurance and technical control arrangements that underpin the delivery, sustainment and long-term operation of a sovereign submarine capability.

We work closely with industry partners and stakeholders across the enterprise to define technical requirements, establish assurance frameworks, and set the conditions under which products can be accepted for build and service. Through clear technical governance, robust evidence and traceability requirements, and a structured assurance approach, we ensure that risks are understood and appropriately managed while maintaining confidence in certification and regulatory outcomes.

Joining the SCE Directorate offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the growth of a nationally significant engineering and assurance capability, helping shape how technical control is exercised across the submarine enterprise while supporting the delivery of a safe, reliable and effective sovereign capability.

Our Ideal Candidate

We are a dynamic organization seeking employees who are agile, innovative and energised by high-paced work. We are seeking highly motivated and collaborative minded people who will have the opportunity to contribute to a once in a lifetime program.

This role is focused on technical governance, assurance, compliance, and technical control of supply chain, rather than the detailed engineering design of submarines. Success in the role requires strong analytical skills, sound engineering judgement and the ability to understand, assess and assure technical information generated by a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

Operating within APS 6 Work Level Standards, the successful candidate will exercise a high degree of independence, manage competing priorities, and contribute to the establishment and continual improvement of engineering governance and assurance capabilities that support safe, compliant and controlled engineering outcomes.

They will demonstrate:

  • Strong Mechanical or Electrical Engineering knowledge, supported by sound engineering judgement and the ability to apply engineering principles in complex and regulated environments.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess technical information, evaluate OQE and make informed, evidence-based recommendations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to develop high quality technical documentation and communicate complex technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams and build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Good judgement, initiative and independence, with a commitment to technical governance, assurance, compliance and continuous improvement.
