Looking for a summer opportunity that gives you practical, hands-on experience in the museum and heritage sector?

Rokowhiria Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum is seeking a motivated summer student to join our team for an 8 to 12-week Collection Care Internship. This is a full-time, Monday to Friday opportunity, with flexibility around the start date for the right person.

Working alongside our Archivist and Collections Manager, you’ll gain practical museum experience while helping improve the storage, organisation and accessibility of our collections.

You’ll get the opportunity to:

  • Build practical skills in collections care, documentation and online collection management systems.
  • Assist with collection audits, object handling, storage improvements, cataloguing and preventative conservation.
  • Get involved in occasional exhibition installation projects.
  • Contribute to meaningful behind-the-scenes work that supports the long-term care and preservation of our collections.
  • Gain experience relevant to future careers in museums, galleries, archives and cultural heritage.

Who would this suit?

Ideally, you’ll be currently studying towards a relevant tertiary qualification and have an interest in museums, history, art, archives or cultural heritage.

Previous museum experience isn’t essential. We’re looking for someone who is curious, organised, detail-focused, willing to learn and happy to get stuck into practical collection work.

Apply now to spend your summer building real-world experience while helping care for and unlock the stories within Rokowhiria’s collections.

To apply, please complete an electronic application form and upload your CV and cover letter.

Applications close Sunday 25 October 2026.
